The aim of this paper is to search for desirable ways of religious education in Christian schools within a Korean school context. This study on the religious education was discussed in three aspects. First, I found through a historical review of religious education that Christian schools needed to respond appropriately to the institutional, legal regulatory as well as to get the inner and external recognition by operating faithfully the contents of the religious education in schools. Second, I found through a review of laws relating to religious education that it is crucial to reconcile the students’ religious freedom and the schools’ freedom of religious education. Third, I proposed, through theoretical discussion about the types of religious education, a new classification scheme, which distinguished religious education as faith education and religious education as spiritual education by considering the essential nature of education. The existing classification system includes sectarian education in religious education and liberal education in religious education. Religious education in Christian schools may vary depending on the type of school, based on the investigation in three aspects of religious education. However, regardless of the type of school, for religious education in Christian schools to become more active, religious education curriculum should be developed and more diverse, and the quality and contents of religion teacher training should be improved. Since the issue of college entrance exam tends to be an obstacle to religious education in Korea, religious education would be wither if it cannot help solve the problem of college entrance exam. Substantial religious education in Christian schools could make the existential life of individual students healthy as well as overcome the crisis of our society resulted from the loss of morality and spirituality.

본 논문은 우리나라의 학교 상황에서 기독교학교에서의 종교교육이 어떠한 형태로 이루어지는 것이 바람직한지 그 방안을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 종교교육에 대해 세 가지 측면에서 고찰하였다. 첫째, 종교교육에 대한 역사적 고찰을 통해서 기독교학교는 제도적, 법적 규제에 적절하게 대응할 뿐 아니라 내적으로 종교교육의 내용을 충실하게 운영함으로 학교 내ㆍ외적 인정을 받는 것이 중요하다는 점을 살펴보았다. 둘째, 종교교육과 관련된 법규에 대한 고찰을 통해 기독교학교에서 학생의 종교적 자유와 학교의 종교교육적 자유를 조화시키는 것이 관건임을 알 수 있다. 셋째, 종교교육의 유형에 대한 이론적 논의를 통해서는 종파교육적 종교교육과 교양교육적 종교교육으로 구분하는 기존의 분류방식에서 교육이 갖는 본질적인 성격을 고려하여 신앙교육적 종교교육과 영성교육을 위한 종교적 교육으로 구분하는 분류방식을 제안하였다. 종교교육에 대한 세 측면에서의 고찰을 토대로 기독교학교에서의 종교교육은 학교의 유형에 따라 달라질 수 있음을 제시하였다. 그러나 학교의 유형에 관계없이 종교교육이 기독교학교에서 보다 활성화되기 위해서는 종교교육에 대한 교육과정이 보다 다양하게 개발되어야 하고, 종교교사 양성의 내용과 질이 향상되어야 함을 지적하였다. 우리나라에서 입시문제는 종교교육에 대해서도 큰 걸림돌이 되기 때문에 종교교육이 입시문제를 해결하는데 도움을 주지 못하면 종교교육은 위축될 수밖에 없다는 사실을 말하였다. 기독교학교에서 내실 있는 종교교육의 실시는 학생 개인의 실존적 삶을 건강하게 할 뿐 아니라 도덕성과 영성의 상실로 맞이하고 있는 우리사회의 위기를 극복하는 방안이 될 수 있을 것이다.
