Glycerol is a promising carbon source for production of reduced chemicals including succinic acid. To improve glycerol uptake and growth rate of a Mannheimia succiniciproducens strain for improved succinic acid production, genetic manipulations were done based on metabolic engineering strategies. Genes related to glycerol uptake pathways and biomass formations were selected for targets of metabolic engineering. Various combinations of target genes which are native or heterologous were co-overexpressed in the M. succiniciproducens strain. As a result, succinic acid production in the M. succiniciproducens strain was increased as well as cell growth rate.
