Polylactic acid (PLA) is an increasingly attractive polymer that can be used in many industries. It is currently synthesized by two-step processes composed of fermentative production of lactic acid followed by rather complicated chemical polymerization step. In this lecture, I will report on the results of combined metabolic and enzyme engineering for the establishment of new pathways in E. coli for the biosynthesis of PLA and lactate containing polyester copolymers.
