In Between Documentary and Fiction ：A Study of Jia Zhang Ke’s Films Joo, Jin-sook professor, Chung-Ang University Jia Zhang Ke would be one of the most reflexive filmmakers who has captured the people/landscape/cityspace of contemporary China where every sector of society confronts rapid changes. He has consistently portrayed marginalized lower class youths and laborers who are in the peril of maladjustment to their times. Throughout his films, he has tried to present pictures of reality whatever his form would be a fiction or documentary. He has followed the realist aesthetics in the history of film, utilizing styles of neo realism, direct cinema and documentary film. Furthermore, he has experimented to erase the boundary between fiction and documentary films in search of the best way to present laborers and their environment. His recent work <24 city> could be read as a convergence of his experiments of film forms for his subjects. Creating a few subtle moments that cross the boundary of fiction and documentary, he seems to find a way to capture what would soon be demolished and disappeared in a style of portrait in <24 city>. This essay traces back the changes in formal elements in Jia Zhang Ke's films, that could make <24 city> effectively deal with disappearing spaces and people.
