The purpose of the present study was to estimate the possibility to expand the class on the basic filmmaking theories for small groups into the on-line course for the large groups of students. This study also sought to answer the following questions: 1) what makes students decide to enroll the on-line course about filmmaking theories?, 2) how well does the on-line lecture meet the students' needs?, 3) how much do the students understand the class materially and try to apply it in appreciating films on their own?, and 4) is it a better idea to diversify the film studies classes? At Sejong Cyber University I started an on-line course for introduction to the filmmaking theories, named Love in Cinema, in spring 2007. Since then, I’ve conducted comprehensive surveys about the above questions at the end of every semester. The results of the surveys show that there’s a possibility of successfully introducing a class on filmmaking theories as liberal arts education. In addition, it is highly expected for the class to broaden its scope and increase its size with web based learning tools. The results of the surveys also indicated most of the students were satisfied with the course so much as they answered to sign up for another similar class such as Love in Cinema Ⅱ. In terms of methodological achievement of the course, students have voluntarily made an effort to understand lecture materials and apply them in their real lives, which can be interpreted as a successful application of self-directed learning. From time to time depending on the characteristics of given activities, however, blended learning was strongly recommended to facilitate understandings of the students. These findings provide students and faculty in film studies with effective ways to develop practical approach to teach and learn filmmaking theories.

본 논문은 그간 전공 학생들을 대상으로 소수 인원에게만 진행했던 영화 제작 관련 기초 이론 수업을 사이버 대학 대형 교양 강좌로 개설할 수 있는지를 알아 보고 가능하다면 학생들이 해당 수업을 선택한 이유와 만족도, 수업 내용에 대한 이해도와 수업 내용을 실제 영화 감상에 적용해 보는지 그 사례는 물론, 이러한 영화 관련 수업의 다양한 교양 과목 확대에 학생들이 찬성하는지 등을 알아보는 데 그 연구의 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 필자는 영화 제작 관련 기초 이론에 관한 교양 강좌인‘영화 속의 사 랑이야기’를 세종 사이버 대학교 교양학부에 2007년 1학기 신규 강좌로 등록해 개설 가능한지를 지켜봤으며, 개설 가능하다면 실제로 대형화할 수 있는지 또한 대형 강의가 될 수 있다면 그것이 일시적인 현상인지 아니면 지속 가능한지를 2008년 1학기 여름 계절학기까지 관찰해 보았다. 그리고 이와 관련된 정확한 자 료와 그 밖의 연구 과제를 수행하기 위해 2008년 1학기와 여름 계절 학기 수강생 전체를 대상으로 설문 조사를 실시했다. 연구 결과 영화 제작 관련 기초 이론 수업의 사이버 대학 교양 강좌는 개설 가 능함은 물론, 폐강과 대형화가 전적으로 학생들의 자율적인 수강 신청에 의해 결 정되는 사이버 대학 특성상 높은 신뢰도로 해당 강좌 관련 강의도 충분히 대형 화 될 수 있으며 강의의 지속 가능성도 높은 것으로 조사됐다. 또한 수강한 학생 들 중 절대 다수가‘영화 속의 사랑이야기2’가 개설되면 수강할 의향을 밝히고 있어 그 전망도 굉장히 밝았다. 강의 만족도는 굉장히 높았으며 해당 강의에 대한 학생들의 강의 평가와 비교 해 보았을 때 이는 별반 차이를 보이지 않았다. 수업 내용의 이해와 학생들의 실 사례 적용에 있어서도 그 교육적 효과는 자기 주도적 학습이 강조되는 사이버 강 의 특성상 유의한 것으로 추정되며, 특정 수업 내용에 있어서는 학생들의 이해도 를 높이기 위해 블렌디드 러닝이 요구됐다. 그밖에 교과목명이 강의 선택에 있어 굉장히 중요한 요소임이 파악됐으며, 이러한 영화 관련 수업의 다양한 교양 과목 확대를 절대 다수의 학생들이 원하고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 이러한 필자의 연구결과는 경쟁력 강화를 고민하는 대학들과 사이버 강의를 준비하는 영화 관련 교육자들에게 분명한 시사점을 제공할 것이다.
