This paper is a study on how the MUJIN Travels and The Fog created a sensation to the readers and the movie goers/audience while they achieved both high artistic quality and popularity. The reason/cause that these two pieces of works fulfilled the high artistic quality and the popularity appeared in a process of mimicking each other even though considering each other rivals. Because of that, the unique style of MUJIN Travels and The Fog is not just shown in the movie The Fog and the novel MUJIN Travels separately. On the contrary, the style of MUJIN Travels and The Fog is made - in between”or “process” while Kim Sung Ok is bring cinematic imagination in a process of creating a novel and movie makers are mimicking fictional things in a movie. MUJIN Travels and The Fog are closely connected in an era of 1960. Especially, the change of audience had a great effect on a fact that these two pieces of works gained high artistic quality and popularity at the same time. Among them, a group of ‘college students’ considered as desiring cultural sensitivity, - it does not matter whether they are actually college students or not - stirred up popularity to these works. This shows that the “college students” became a generation actively consuming the culture in 1960’s. The culture since 1960 changed according to the taste of the college students and the generation/public? desiring the college students’ consumption. And the fiction MUJIN Travels and movie The Fog shows the starting point of this change. In addition, a college student culture, so called a 1960’s taste, is made in a process that movie and novel come across.

이 논문은 1960년대에 <무진기행>과 <안개>가 작품성과 대중성을 동시에 획득하면서 독자와 관객들에게 반향을 일으키게 된 원인에 대 해서 고찰한 것이다. 이 두 작품이 작품성과 대중성을 충족시킬 수 있 었던 이유는 영화와 소설이 서로를 경쟁관계로 인식하면서도 모방하 게 되는 과정에서 생긴다. 때문에 <안개>와 <무진기행>의 독특한 스 타일은 영화 <안개>와 소설 <무진기행>만으로는 드러나지 않는다. 오히려 김승옥이 소설을 창작하는 과정에서 영화적인 상상력을 가져 오고, 영화에서 소설적인 것을 모방하는 그‘사이’그‘과정’에서 <안 개>와 <무진기행>의 스타일이 만들어진다는 것이다. <무진기행>과 <안개>는 1960년대라는 시대성과 밀착되어 있다. 특 히 이 두 작품이 공히 작품성과 대중성을 동시에 획득할 수 있었던 것 은 독자와 관객층의 변화가 매우 큰 역할을 했다고 할 수 있다. 그 중 ‘대학생’그룹이라 불리는 이들 - 그들이 실제 대학생이었건 그렇지 않건 그것은 중요하지 않다 -이 욕망하는 문화적 감성이 이 두 작품 에 대중적 인기를 불어넣어 주었다. 이는 1960년대‘대학생’이라는 이들이 문화를 적극적으로 소비하는 세대로 변화했다는 것을 보여주 면서, 이들이 문화를 소비하는 주도 세력이 되었다는 것을 암시하는 것이다. 때문에 1960년대 이후의 문화는 대학생과 대학생의 소비를 욕망하는 세대들의 취향에 맞추어 변화하게 되고, 그 시발점을 잘 보 여주는 것이 바로 소설 <무진기행>과 영화 <안개>이다. 또한 영화와 소설이 만나는 그 과정에서 대학생 문화라는 1960년대적 취향이 만 들어진다.
