초록

영어

Thomas Aquinas was one of the most significant pioneers in the history of philosophy who systematically treated human emotions from an anthropological as well as from a moral point of view. The aim of this article is to bring out the richness of Aquinas' theories of emotion, mainly by analyzing his texts of Summa Theologiae within the broader framework of his theories of habitus and virtue. From this, it will be shown that Thomas' distinction between antecedent and consequent emotion, and the real significance of Thomas' claim that passion increases the moral status of a human action, are best understood in the context of his arguments on habituation and virtue. This article also argues that Antonio Damasio's somatic marker hypothesis provides support to Thomas Aquinas' insights on 'habituated emotion' at the neurological level and opens his thoughts to contemporary analysis.
