Taiwanese writers during the Japanese occupation period did not often depict Japanese Imperial Emperor and family since they were more concerned with colonial policy in colonial Taiwan than imperial power that only symbolized the national body for the colony. But in A Railway Runningthrough Taiwan, anovelbythe Japanesewriter Nisikawa Mituru, who had long stayed in Taiwan, he represents the majesty of Imperial Household and reconfigures the history of Japanese living in Taiwan through the lens of a photographer character and the style of reportage. Through closely analyzing the text, this paper attempts to articulate how Japanese writers in Taiwan represent Japanese Imperial Household in the process of colonial modernization and the meanings of these representations as well as the double consciousness of homeland within these Japanese writers’ identities throughout the history of colonial Taiwan and Japanese imperialism.

日本統治期台湾人作家によって、天皇ならびに皇室についてふれた<植民地テクスト>は決して多くない。植民地作家たちは<国体>を象徴する皇室権力を描くことよりも、植民地政策に対する抵抗を描くことに力を注いでいたものと考えられる。然しながら、在台日本人作家である西川満著󰡔台湾縦貫鉄道󰡕には、撮影者(カメラマン)のレンズ、あるいは、報道文学の筆を通して、皇室の威厳が展示され、また日本の外地における植民地の歴史を再構築している様相を見て取ることができるのである。この度の発表は、テクスト分析を通して、植民地における現代化工事事業において在台日本人作家が如何に皇族の偶像を形作り、また、そこに包含されることとなる象徴性に如何なる意味が付加されるのかを明らかにしたい。そして植民地の歴史を再解釈することで在台日本人作家が自らのアイデンティティを保持している“双郷意識”について言及したい。
