The article raises the question of how different understandings of human nature and social evil could affect different degrees of social engagements into God's call for justice in this world. For this purpose, the article focuses on and evaluates Reinhold Niebuhr's and Beverly W. Harrison's understandings of human nature and social evil in their contexts. There are two important questions in the article. One is the question of how their understanding of human sinfulness and social evil could limit a potentiality of the moment of self-transcendence or discourage human moral agency. The other is the question of where we can find human moral agency, that is, the power of praxis to overcome the structure of social evil in spite of accepting human sinfulness in the society. While emphasizing human tendency to sin which does not accept his or her finitude, human pride as a rebellion against God, the inevitability of social evil, and agape achieved not by human effort but God's intervention into history, Niebuhr seems not to make a space for human agency to get to the moment of self-transcendence in the society. However, Niebuhr's realistic understanding of human nature and social evil could provide a critical power to thoroughly examine inner sinful structures of the communities of faith and to put the communities into praxis for building up moral relations. For he paradoxically points out that a serious problem of the community of faith is a moral optimistic liberalism without its deep understanding of the realistic sense of sinfulness in the society, especially its community. Contrasted to Niebuhr's, Harrison points out that the reality of social evil is an attempt to paralyze the moral agency of the oppressed, the ignored, and the marginalized in the society even though accepting how serious human sinfulness is in the society and social structures of evil. Thus, for her, the essence of human nature is not sinfulness but a radical moral creativity that can imagine and make new and various moral relations. Based on two scholars' understandings, this article finally concludes that our understanding of human nature and social evil in communities of faith are deeply related to our social engagements in God's call for justice. In addition, it puts an emphasis on the fact that how theologies can empower the marginalized into becoming active moral agents should be one of the critical criteria to evaluate the adequacy of our theology for the praxis of our communities of faith.

본 논문은 기독교 현실주의 전통의 흐름 가운데 놓여있는 라인홀드 니버와 베벌리 해리슨, 두 학자의 인간 이해, 특히 죄성에 관한 이해 그리고 사회적 악에 관한 이해를 통해서, 이러한 서로 다른 이해들이 어떻게 사회 가운데 정의를 이루어가라는 하나님의 초대에 반응하게 하는지에 관해서 관심한다. 인간의 죄성에 대한 이해가 인간의 도덕적 능력, 자기초월의 능력을 심각히 제한하고 있는지, 아니면 죄의 보편성의 인식에도 불구하고, 사회적 악의 구조를 극복해 나갈 실천적 힘을 역설적으로 제공하고 있는지 니버와 해리슨의 견해를 살펴본다. 니버는 인간의 유한성을 인정하지 않으려는 죄의 경향성, 인간의 자유가 결국 하나님에 대한 반항으로서 교만에 이르는 죄에 머물게 된 것, 사회적 악의 불가피성, 십자가 사랑은 인간의 역사 가운데서 성취되는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 전적인 개입에 의해 이루어진다는 점을 강조한다. 이런 점들에서 그가 인간의 도덕적 자기 초월의 지점을 거의 인정하지 않고 있는 듯하지만, 니버의 현실주의적 인간이해, 사회적 악의 불가피성에 관한 이해는 신앙공동체 안의 내적인 죄악의 구조를 비판적으로 점검하여 실천으로 이끄는 힘을 제공할 가능성을 엿보게 한다. 왜냐하면 죄의 현실성에 관한 깊은 이해가 없는 도덕적 신앙적 낙관주의가 신앙공동체에게 있어서 매우 심각한 문제임을 역설적으로 지적하고 있기 때문이다. 반면에 해리슨은 니버의 인간의 죄성 이해, 사회적 악의 현실을 인정하면서, 특별히 사회적 악의 실체를 억눌린 자들, 사회 가운데 끊임없이 소외되어온 자들의 도덕적 능력을 마비시키는 지배적 관계성들이라고 지적한다. 그러므로, 해리슨에게 있어서는 인간의 본성의 정수는 죄성이라기 보다, 도덕적 관계성들을 형성할 수 있는 급진적인 도덕적 창조력이다. 이와 같은 두 학자의 이해를 근거로, 본 논문은 신학적 인간 이해, 사회적 악의 이해가 신앙공동체의 사회적 실천에 깊이 연관되어 있음을 지적하고, 또한 사회적 약자들에게 도덕적, 사회적 힘을 부여하는 것이 신앙공동체를 위한 신학적 실천의 잣대가 되어야 함을 말한다.
