The purpose of this study is to find out the determinants of life satisfaction among the rural elderly. For this purpose, a set of variables that represent the socio-demographic characteristics of the elderly--gender, age, educational attainment, health status, outdoor activity, coresidence, spouse, household size, employment, contact with adult children, inheritance, religiosity, and religious participation--were suggested to identify each of their impacts on life satisfaction. Data were collected by standardized questionnaire interviews with the elderly, and the data were analyzed in terms of correlation and multiple regression methods. Results of data analysis have indicated that the three variables of religious participation, health status, and inheritance have statistically significant causal impacts on their life satisfaction. In other words, the elderly who participate in religious activities more often, who maintain good health status, and who have not inherited their properties as yet were more satisfied with their life than their counterparts. The findings are discussed and interpreted with suggesting some salient theoretical and policy implications.

이 연구는 노인의 생활만족도에 영향을 미치는 사회인구학적 변인들의 영향을 밝히기 위한 목적으로 수행되었다. 구체적으로, 노인의 사회인구학적 변인 13가지를 독립변인으로 설정하고 노인의 생활만족도를 종속변인으로 설정하여, 각 변인들이 노인의 생활만족도에 미치는 인과적 영향을 분석하였다. 연구방법은 전남 영광지역에 거주하는 65세 이상의 남․여 노인 243명을 직접 면접 조사하였다. 자료처리를 위하여 상관관계 분석 및 중다회귀분석을 실시하였다. 본 조사의 주요 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 상관관계 분석결과 생활만족도와 유의미한 상관관계를 갖는 변인으로는 종교성, 종교활동, 여성노인, 교육수준, 건강상태, 외출빈도, 유배우 노인, 재산상속완료가 있었다. 둘째, 중다회귀 분석결과 생활만족도에 유의미한 인과적 영향을 미치는 변인으로는 종교활동, 건강상태, 재산상속완료가 있었다. 즉, 종교활동 참여도가 왕성한 노인일수록 생활만족도가 더 높은 것으로 나타났고, 건강상태가 양호한 노인일수록 생활만족도가 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 상속을 완료한 노인보다 상속을 아직 완료하지 않은 노인이 생활만족도가 더 높은 것으로 나타났다.
