In the current age of media, the style and appearance of politicians is a part of their political strategies. Politicians represent their tendencies and ideologies with their styles. In addition, their style and image also became important in politics. Michelle Obama, the first lady of the United States, was selected in this study, and the colors used in her fashion choices were analyzed using NCS(the Natural Color System). Eighty-three articles were extracted for research from the web from June 1, 2007 to November 30, 2010 and divided into three main situations; during the election campaign, and forums in the United States and abroad. The colors shown in the pictures were divided into main color, assisting color and stress color by fashion experts and the colors were measured in a vivid tone. During the election campaign, the main colors worn by Michelle Obama showed high R and RB affiliations, which symbolized conservatives and the Democratic Party. For diplomatic occasions, the colors worn had a Y affiliation and signified hope and change. For domestic ceremonies, R and B affiliations were specially observed. These colors tend to mean conservativeness. In conclusion, Michelle Obama’s fashion style is related to her political orientation. The colors aim to express something, and her choices in fashion style are made considering the characteristics of political events.

미디어 시대가 도래하면서 정치인들의 외모와 패션 스타일은 그들에게 정치적으로 중요한 요소로 자리 잡고 있으며, 정치인들은 그들의 패션 스타일로 정치적 성향과 이념을 대변하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 그 중 현재 세계적으로 가장 주목받고 있는 미국의 퍼스트레이디 미셸 오바마를 대표적 인물로 선정하여 패션 스타일의 한 요소인 색채를 분석하였다. 자료는 포털사이트에서 검색되는 2007년 6월 1일부터 2010년 11월 30일까지 국내외 사진기사로 83여점을 선별하여 기사의 내용 분석을 통하여 3가지 상황으로 구분하였다. 먼저 미셸 오바마의 패션이 회자되었던 대통령 선거운동 당시의 사진기사와 당선 후 국제적으로 스포트라이트를 받는 외교사절의 모습 사진기사, 그리고 미국 내 캠페인이나 포럼 등의 자국의 공식행사의 모습의 3가지 상황으로 구분하여 패션 색상을 NCS 색체계를 이용하여 분석하였다. 사진의 색상은 3명의 패션전문가에 의해 주조색, 보조색, 강조색으로 구분하였고, 색의 측정은 비비드 톤에서 측정하였다. 논문의 결과 미셸 오바마의 패션 색상은 Y, R, RB, B, BG, N계열에 집중되는 것을 볼 수 있으며, Y, R, RB, B계열은 정치적 의미를 가지고 전략적으로 사용되었다. Y계열은 명랑함, 유쾌함, 높은 이상, 희망, 낙관을 상징하며 RB계열은 화합, B계열은 보수와 민주당의 상징으로 사용되고 있다. 미셸 오바마의 패션에서 색조에서 순색량은 0~85까지 범위에서 나타나고 있으며 무채색에 가까운 0~20까지를 제외하면 30~85까지 범위의 순색빈도는 비슷한 것으로 나타난다. NCS색삼각형의 S-C축 가까이에 집중된 분포를 보이고 있으며, 백색량이 적은 색조를 선호하는 것을 알 수 있다. 주조색, 보조색, 강조색 간의 색조 배색은 전 영역에 걸쳐 다양하게 나타난다.
