This paper aims to explore the role and mode of existence of sasin(詞臣, literary officials) that existed during King Yejong's period in Goryeo Dynasty. Sasin commonly refers to government officials who were in charge of matters related to literary arts, while working close to the king. King Yejong himself had an extensive interest and diversified taste in culture and frequently communicated with his officials via writing. When he corresponded with the officials through poetry and prose, some stood out by their writing ability. They were sasin, in a large sense, in that they took charge of literary arts and writing in general. Hence, it could be speculated that they not only corresponded personally with the king through writing, but also were responsible for official and diplomatic documents. Their range of activities and creative tendency, at times, would overlap with the Taoist or Confucian bureaucrat-cum-writers, and, at other times, would differ with them and create mixtures and variations. Their role marked an important starting point for the bureaucratic literature that was yet to emerge in the next era.

이 논문에서 필자는 고려 예종 시기에 활동했던 詞臣의 역할과 존재 방식을 살피고자 한다. 詞臣은 일반적으로 왕 주변에서 文翰을 담당하는 관리를 범칭하는 말이다. 예종 자신이 문화적으로 다양한 취향을 가진 인물이었으며, 많은 창작 활동을 통해 신하들과 소통했던 인물이었다. 그는 신하들과 시문을 주고받는 일이 많았는데, 그 과정에서 창작 능력을 통해 자신의 입지를 만들었던 관료들이 있다. 그들을 詞臣이라고 불렀다. 그들은 文翰의 직임을 담당하는 넓은 의미의 詞臣들이었고, 따라서 왕과의 시문 창화 뿐 아니라 공식적인 문서, 외교 문서 등을 대부분 담당했을 것이다. 이들의 활동 범위나 창작 경향은 도가적 계열의 관료 문인이나 유가적 계열의 관료 문인들과 겹치기도 하고 차이를 보이기도 하면서 착종과 변이를 만들어 낸다. 이들은 다음 시기 관각문학의 중요한 출발점으로서의 역할을 한 것으로 보인다.
