The Beliefs and the Practices of Sunday School Teachers in a Multicultural Education Program

This research investigated the relationship between the belief and practice of Sunday school teachers in multi-cultural situations. The purpose of this study was to examine the following research question. Is there any significant difference between teachers' beliefs and practices of Sunday school teachers in a multi-cultural environment and the experiences of the multi-cultural family's children.This question examined three sub- scales of beliefs and practices in the education of multi-cultural children such as, identity of multi-cultural family children', social adjustment for multi-cultural family children', and the multi-education for non multi-cultural family children'. The subjects used in this study were 160 Sunday school teachers in Seoul, Incheon, Pusan, Kimhae, and KwangJu. All of these teachers were involved in multi-cultural teaching programs and activities. The results of the study were as follows, there is no significant difference between the beliefs and the practices of Sunday school teachers according to age and sex.However depending on the experience of teaching multi-cultural family's children' the teachers showed a significant difference in sub-cales as it relates to the, identity of the multi-cultural family children, and the multi-education for non multi, cultural family children. Based on these results the research will suggest that, to match teachers, beliefs and practices, churches might need to develop multi-cultural curriculums and establish support systems for teachers.
