This article attempted to find some elements of Augustinian concept of conversion in Bernard in the framework of the soul's spiritual journey in love. Primarily drawing on Augustine's Confessions and Bernard's Of Conversion: A Sermon to the Clergy as main texts for analysis, this article, in particular, brought to the fore their thoughts on conversion as an inward movement. As to the method of research, this article utilized the “triformal scheme" that R. D. Crouse advanced as a result of his probe into the structure and unity of Augustine's Confessions. Asking the question, “What are the phases, or moments, of the soul's ascent to God?," he found an answer in the “triformal scheme of ascent―exteriora, interiora (inferior), superiora." For Augustine, Crouse argued, the ascent was a movement away from “external phenomena to the soul itself and from the soul to God." In their concepts of conversion, both Augustine and Bernard emphasize the soul's return into the interior from the exterior world, the soul's confrontation with itself, the soul's awareness of itself and reflexive presence to itself, the soul's acknowledgement of its sinfulness, the purification of the soul and its eyes, the soul's ascending movement towards God. Among all these features of Augustine's and Bernard's concepts of conversion, this article highlighted the intriguing aspect of the soul's return into the interior, which indicates a Christian version of the Delphic maxim "Know thyself." This article also found that, in Augustine's and Bernard's notions of the soul's spiritual journey, their theological views of the universe with its specific hierarchy and human beings come together under the theme of love, or more precisely, the theme of ordering of love or ordered love. When one's love becomes an ordered love in one's spiritual journey in the universe(macro- universe) and oneself(micro-universe), one's soul can see divine light shining upon itself from above and attain the vision of God, who is Truth, Goodness, Beauty, and Love. In this superior phase, the soul finds true happiness and rest. (Ewha Womans University, Lecturer / sun-young.kim@ptsem.edu)
