Our Korean traditional bow has existed since the prehistorical times, which is proved by a lot of the remains of arrow heads of the times. Until the period of Chosun, our traditional bows were used as a military weapon. Lee Soon-Shin’s victories in Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 resulted in the excellency of the bows. The bows used as a military weapon in national emergencies were used for the cultivation of mind and body of the aristocratic class in ordinary times. Since ancient times, the archery in the East has been one of the six required subjects(the Six Arts, etiquette, music, archery, horsemanship, calligraphy and mathematics) in educating the children of noble birth, due to its educational value. This study is to inquire into the educational significance and the advantages as a practical education of our traditional archery, and the problems and the alternatives of the archery education for further development of traditional culture and education. With consecutive efforts of Korea National Archery Association, National Association of Archery for All, and lots of bowmen in favor of our traditional archery, it is anticipated that our traditional archery will contribute to the development of our traditional marital arts and culture of sports.
