The purpose of this study is show how Philip Augustus (r.1180-1223) strengthened the French feudal monarchy in its initial stage. For this object, I first showed the process by which the first Capetian kings gained their royal power in the face of the powerful vassals threatening the royal domain, that is, those in Blois-Champagne, Angevin Empire and Flanders. Secondly, I wanted to point out the decisive moments in the Philip's reign. During his reign, he succeeded in throwing away the obstacles to the French royal power. The third Crusade, by carrying away Philip's vassals-adversaries' lives, gave him the indispensable opportunity to initiate his own royal politics. Finally, I analysed his two policies for the strengthening of the royal power: administrative policy (installation of new administrative personnel- baillis, familiars in the court) and religion policy. In the course of this study, we could confirm that the foundation of the feudal France was Philip August's work.
