Jung Pyeong-gu is the author of humorous stories but also he is well known for his distinguished conduct. A biography which tells of his colorful life is contained in an anthology by the modern Confucian scholar, Song Ki-myeon. Generally, a biography follows specific literary conventions, mixing both praise and censure, and furthermore the biography of 'Jung Pyeong-gu' is also well formalized as a result of its stories serving an instructional purpose. All of his activities in the highlighted part are described in nine anecdotes, though these are only considered to be the exceptional cases. The anecdotes are based on fictitious stories and use writing materials from the modern period of the Joseon Dynasty even though 'Jung Pyeong-gu' lived during the middle period of this dynasty. Somewhat paradoxically, he is a Confucian scholar with strong feudal values though his attitude tends to be critical towards politicians. According to an analysis of the nine anecdotes, 'Jung Pyeong-gu' demonstrates his special skills with humor and jokes. The biography of 'Jung Pyeong-gu' also has a significant tragic allegory about an unjust social system that discriminates against people who are poor or come from the lower orders even though they are capable individuals. Thus the incompetence of the hierarchy is connected to the tragedy of the poor. 'Youjae Song Ki-myeon' was intended to awaken the social conscience of politicians and convey moral lessons to future generations in accordance with the principles enshrined in the biography of 'Jung Pyeong-gu'.

鄭平九는 諧謔이 담긴 이야기의 生産者이며 異人的인 행동을 한 것으로 有名하다. 이런 정평구의 독특한 삶을 다룬 人物傳이 近代 儒學者였던 宋基冕의 文集에 실려 있다. 정평구에 관한 이야기는 野談에서도 발견되는데, ｢정평구전｣이 지어진 시기가 󰡔구비문학대계󰡕보다 앞선다는 점에서 다양한 문헌들에 존재하는 이야기들을 수용했을 가능성이 존재한다. 또한 허구적인 내용들이 가미되어 있지만 유학자의 가치관과 배치되는 비현실적인 내용들은 제외시키고 있으며 최대한 인물전의 기술 방식에 부합되도록 간략하게 제시하고 있음도 알 수 있다. 일반적으로 인물전은 褒貶意識을 基底로 하여 일정한 樣式的 특징을 固守해 왔는데, ｢鄭平九傳｣의 전개 방식을 分析해 본 결과 導入部를 제외한 나머지 부분들은 잘 갖추어져 있음을 알 수 있었다. 다만 서두부에 해당하는 입전취지가 논찬부에 나타나 있는 것과 활약에 해당하는 행적부분 전체가 일화를 중심으로 기술되어 있는 것이 매우 異例的이라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 ｢정평구전｣에는 전반적으로 좌절된 삶에 대한 悔恨의 정서와 批判意識이 내재되어 있다. 이는 능력은 있으나 가난하고 낮은 문벌로 태어나 重用되지 못한 데서 오는 안타까움에서 기인된 것이다. 이러한 유재의 爲政者에 대한 비판의식은 그가 지은 詩와 賦, 書에도 확인된다.
