This study analyzes symbols of shamanism and tools of healing which are seen on the works of Joseph Beuys, and finds out how to impact on his enlarged concept of art. Furthermore, it is studied whether the modern art has possibility and meaning as art of healing by analysis of works of Joseph Beuys. Today, mankinds confront the crisis of ecology in industrial civilization and the growth of civilization is devastating human spirit and depriving of human purity. As an alternative of healing of harmful influence, Joseph Beuys extended his scope of art to politics, economics, culture, education and environment. Finally, he verified its possibility. From such a standpoint, it is important significance to study the enlarged concept of art and symbolic tools of healing which Joseph Beuys suggested. In addition, it is necessary to study artists who have influenced on fine arts of healing from before modern fine arts to abstract fine art, and to establish new and diverse interpretation on its viewpoint. 본 연구는 요셉보이스(Joseph Beuys, 1921-1986)의 예술개념을 중심으로 그의 작품에 나타나는 샤머니즘 적 상징과 치유 의 도구들을 분석하고 그것들이 그의 확대된 예술개념에 어떠한 형식으로 영향을 주었는가를 연구하였다. 또한 현대미술의 지 대한 영향을 미친 요셉보이스의 예술작업분석을 통하여 현대예술이 치유의 미술로서의 가능성과 의미를 갖는지 알아보고자 하 였다. 현대인류는 지금 현대의 산업문명 속에서 생태학적 위기에 직면했으며 문명의 발달은 인간정신의 황 폐화와 인간본연 의 순수함을 잃게 만들었다. 이러한 병폐의 치유의 대안으로 요셉보이스는 확대된 예술이라는 개념으로 정 치, 경제, 문화, 교육, 환경에 이르기까지 모든 분야에 예술의 영역을 확장시켰다. 그리고 그것의 가능성을 실증해보였다. 이러한 관점에서 요셉보이 스의 확대된 예술개념과 치유적 상징도구들을 연구하는 것은 매우 중요한 의미가 있다고 생각한다. 또한, 본 연구를 통하여 현 대미술이전의 작가중심의 연구와 더불어 현대추상미술까지 중심적 위치에서 치유미술에 지대한 영향을 미 친 작가들의 연구의 필요성을 느끼며 치유미술적 관점에서의 새롭고 다양한 해석이 새롭게 정립되었으면 한다.
