Chinese calligraphy has eternal history, which enabled people to be satisfied in terms of aesthetic desire and feel the taste of traditional culture for a long period of time. It has also served an important role for the cultivation of mind and body. Calligraphy has been succeeded as a traditional way of mind and body cultivation. As dance or music is called expressional art, fine art, drawing or sculpture is called plastic art, texts/letters are called linguistic art, and drama or film is called comprehensive art, calligraphy is called the art of line. As one’s emotion can be relieved through exercising calligraphy that has in-depth artistry as well as eternal presence in the history, the exercising calligraphy has been broadly applied in medical practice as a way a way to treat patients. In this study, calligraphy is applied as a medical treatment to improve negative symptoms of the schizophrenes and those patients can remove the self-destructive emotion and restore the sense of self-confidence based on the recognition of their own potential through the artworks and calligraphies they have created while improving their emotional states and social tactics. In this sense, it is very critical to seek a systemized method for individual treatment or customized treatment combining calligraphy treatment with psychical cure. 중국의 서예는 유구한 역사를 가지고 있으며, 아주 오랜 기간 많은 사람들에게 미적 욕구충족과 전통문화 의 향취를 느끼게 해 주었을 뿐만 아니라 심신수양에도 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 서예는 전통적인 심신수양의 한 방법으로 전해내려 오고 있는데, 춤이나 음악은 표현 예술, 회화나 조소는 조형예술, 문자는 언어예술, 희극이나 영화는 종합예술이라고 불리듯, 서예는 선의 예술이라고 불리고 있다. 유구한 역사적 내력과 심후한 예술성을 가진 서예를 익힘으로써 정서를 완화해줄 수 있어, 서예훈련은 이 미 하나의 치료방 법으로써 임상에서 광범위하게 응용되어지고 있다. 본 논문에서 서예치료는 주로 정신분열증환자의 음성증상을 개선하는데 환자는 자신의 미술 작품 및 서예 작품을 통해 본인 의 능력을 인식함으로써 자괴감은 없애고 자신감을 얻게 되어, 정서 및 대인 교제력을 개선할 수 있는 것이 다. 따라서 서예 치료와 심리치료를 결합시켜, 체계적인 개별 치료나 맞춤치료 방법을 모색하는 하는 것도 아주 중요하다.
