When looking back the history of the art therapy, its root can be found both in the East and the West. However, the art therapy in real sense was started first in the West. Our art therapy also continued to progress significantly since its introduction from the West. However, the art therapy that has been studied following the cultural, medical, counseling and artistic features of the West is causing many conflicts when mixed to the East. It is essential to establish an art therapy suitable for the cultural, medical, counseling and artistic features of the East. This study is intended to prepare a foundation to seek a development direction of the Eastern art therapy and secure a strong footing for the art therapy in the East. 미술치료의 역사를 되짚어 보자면 동양과 서양에서 모두 그 근원을 찾을 수 있다. 그러나 미술치료가 본격 적으로 연구되기 시작한 것은 서양이다. 우리나라의 미술치료 역시 서양에서 도입된 이래로 큰 발전을 거듭해가고 있다. 그 러나 서양의 문화 적, 의학적, 상담적, 미술적 특성에 맞게 연구되어 온 미술치료의 많은 부분이 동양에서의 접목에 있어 충 돌이 일고 있다. 동 양의 문화적, 의학적, 상담적, 미술적 특성에 맞는 미술치료의 설립이 절실히 요구되고 있다. 본 연구를 통 해 동양 미술치료 의 발전 방향을 모색하고 미술치료가 동양에서 그 위치를 확고히 다지기 위한 발판을 마련하고자 한다.
