The purpose of this study is to conduct art therapeutic processes more effectively by minimizing errors and providing a concrete theoretical foundation in forming (drawing) analyses. To achieve this goal, the art works of Cheon Kyungja, who has established her own unique artistic world, are observed in depth：analyses of various self-defense mechanisms found in her artworks and the exploration of motives in her art-making process. Every work of art conveys its artist’s intention and also reflects his or her mental state whether consciously or unconsciously. Therefore, it is considered that any work of art has an inseparable connection from human psychology. In other words, to study about one’s artistic world is to study about his or her spiritual world. To support this notion, a theoretical foundation should be provided. Also considering this aspect, the interpretation of artwork using a self-defensive mechanism has significant meaning. This paper only deals with Cheon’s artwork, however I will study other Korean artists and their works in further research. It is hoped that the findings in future research will aid in the establishment of new ways of drawing (forming) analyses based on our own cultural characteristics, not simply relying on the existing western cultured forming (drawing) analysis methods that we are currently adopting. 본 연구는 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 자신만의 독특한 작품세계를 엮어가고 있는 화가 천경자의 작품을 통하여 미술작 품 속에 나타 나는 다양한 자아방어기제를 분석하고, 작품제작에 대한 동기를 읽어냄으로 그림분석의 한계(오차)를 극복하 고, 그림분석에 있어 구체적인 이론적 근거를 제시함으로써 미술치료과정을 보다 효과적으로 이끌어나갈 수 있음을 기술하였 다. 모든 미술 작품에는 그것을 제작한 작가의 의도가 포함되며, 의식적이든 무의식적이든 이것은 곧 그의 심리적인 상태를 나타낸다. 즉, 미술은 인간의 심리와는 떨어질 수 없다. 따라서 한 작가의 작품세계를 연구하는 것은 그의 정신세계를 연구하 는 것이며, 이 를 뒷받침하기 위해선 이론적인(심리학적) 근거가 제시되어야 할 것이다. 그리고 이런 차원에서, 자아방어기 제를 통한 작품 의 해석은 중요한 의미가 있다고 생각된다. 본 연구에서는 천경자의 작품만을 다루었지만, 앞으로 좀 더 많은 우리나라 작가 들의 작품세계를 다루려한다. 그리고 그러한 연구를 통하여 서구문화의 그림분석을 그대로 수용했던 기존의 방식을 벗어나 우리문화만의 고유성을 토대로, 그림에 대한 분석적 방법이 새롭게 수립되었으면 한다.
