Problems in the Translation of Calligraphy History and Solution
초록
영어
Translation is the basis of all fields of studies and necessary for their advancement. Cultural translation is one type that is difficult to do among all sorts of translation. It is not easy to find fitting words for terms, names of persons and places, and even titles, especially when translating texts of oriental studies like calligraphy, which does not exist in the West. This study discusses such problems as expressing in English technical terms of calligraphy, orthography, and names of persons and places, and suggests the solutions driven from my experiences of translation. Technical terms should sometimes be translated by adding a note. Some words need to be translated in English by writting down their Korean pronounciation in the target langugage, and some proper nouns, by marking them in English alphabet as they are pronounced in the Chinese language. The answers that are still left unsolved after applying the above techniques should be acquired by asking authors or their descendants, scholars studying the authors or even a publisher. Communicating with them is the best way to publish a translated book in high quality. The communication could even make copyright fees negotiable. I hope this paper could contribute to the development of translation of rare fields of studies, like calligraphy.
