The purpose of this study was to investigate strategies that elementary school children use in their practical arts problem solving process and to examine inductively the meanings of what the children experiences from solving practical arts problems. For this purpose, following the qualitative research procedure, we presented students with problem 'Making a bag with newspaper' under a specific condition, collected data through observing their problem solving process, and analyzed the data.
The subjects of this study were 10 sixth graders at M Elementary School. Data were collected through think aloud, observations, interviews and free form essays.
Findings from this study are as follows.
A. What strategies do elementary school children use in solving a practical arts
problem?
The students used largely four strategies to solve the practical arts problem, which
were meta cognition, contextualization, empirical rule, and self evaluation.
B. what do elementary school children experience from a practical arts problem solving activity?
Not as in other curriculums, the students had various meaningful experiences while solving the practical arts problem, which provided them with opportunities to work by themselves.

이 연구의 목적은 실과 문제해결 과정에서 초등학생이 사용하는 전략을 확인하고, 이러한 실과 문제해결에서 초등학생이 경험한 것들이 어떠한 의미가 있는 지를 귀납적으로 알아보는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 경기도 김포시 M초등학교 6학년 학생 10명을 대상으로 일정한 조건 속에서 i 신문지를 이용하여 가방 만들기 I를 문제로 제시하고 학생들의 문제해결 과정을 질적 연구방법을 사용하여 분석하였다.
이 연구에서 나타난 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 학생들은 실과 문제를 해결하면서 크게 네 가지 전략을 사용하였는데 이를 정리하면 메타인지, 맥락화 하기, 경험칙 전략, 자기평가로 나타났다.
둘째, 학생들은 직접 활동하고 체험하는 실과 문제를 해결하면서 여러 가지 의미 있는 경험을 하였는데 크게 세 가지로 나누어보면 학생들은 실과 문제를 해결하면서 잠재되어 있는 능력들을 직접 활용해보는 경험을 하게 되었고y 학생들은 실과 문제를 해결하면서 직접 활동하고 체험함으로써 시행착오를 거치며 새로운 방법들을 발견하고 다양한 지식을 습득하게 되었으며 I 학생들은 자신의 문제해결 과정과 결과를 되돌아보며, 반성적 사고를 할 기회를 가졌으며 정의적으로 긍정적인 변화가 일어났다.
