In this case study, children from low-income families were
subjected to an after-school-group art-therapy program with the purpose of finding on children’s self-esteem and interpersonal skills.
For the study, the local teacher chose 5 students among the 10 year old students attending "C" City gongbubang(study group for the children from low-income families). The study program consisted of weekly sessions spanning from September 13th, 2006 to March 21st, each lasting about 50 minutes for a total 24 sessions. Self-esteem scales, interpersonal relationship change scales, KSD and KFD tests were completed before and after the program to objectify the effects of group art therapy. Paired sample t-test was used in data interpretation for finding therapeutic effectiveness. Overall results are as follows: First, group art therapy didn’t lead to any significant increase in the subjects’ self-esteem, but did have an effect on the subjects’ interpersonal skills. Second, depending on the phase of the program, (earlier, later) art therapy had an effect on improving self-esteem and behaviors related to interpersonal skills of the subjected students. Third, in drawing tests, KSD showed a positive change in self-esteem and interpersonal relationship skills, whereas KFD revealed no noticeable effect on the students involved. Results of the study suggest that group art therapy has a positive effect on the self-esteem and interpersonal skills of gongbubang children from low-income families.
