The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of music therapists’ identity and to suggest appropriate answer for understanding music therapy and the rolel as a music therapist. Five music therapists participated in this study and data were gathered through depth interview. Date were analyzed by using phenomenological research method of Giorgi(2003). The results of the study revealed 8 domains and 16 subdomains. The results showed that through 8 domains : past-musical experience for internal pleasure and esthetic self investigation, choosing music therapy by internal need and altruism, changing attitudes regarding music therapy to therapeutic perspectives, confusion of identity due to confuse the concept of music therapy and difficulty to prove an therapeutic effectiveness, negative effect by demotivation and trial and error, attemption to self-clinical investigation, growth of self identity, and establishing strong identity, music therapist grow their identities as professional music therapists.

이 연구는 음악치료사의 정체성이 형성되는 과정을 통하여 음악치료사로서의 발전을 꾀하려는 여러 음악치료사들과 학생들에게 음악치료에 관한 보다 깊은 이해와 더불어 음악치료사로서의 자신의 역할과 앞으로의 경험과 계획에 대한 미래지향적 성찰의 길을 제안하는데 그 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 다섯 명의 음악치료사의 경험을 심층면담을 통해 수집하였으며, 결과는 Giorgi(2003)의 현상학적 연구방법을 사용하여 분석하였다. 면담 내용의 분석을 통하여 77개의 의미단위들로부터 33개의 의미단위, 16개의 하위구성요소와 8개의 구성요소들이 도출되었다. 연구결과 음악치료사들은 내적 즐거움과 심미적 자기탐구로서의 과거 음악경험, 변화와 호기심의 내적욕구와 애타심에 의해 음악치료 선택, 음악과 인간관계의 치료적 관점으로의 인식변화와 치료효과의 입증필요성 인식, 음악치료의 개념혼동과 치료효능성 입증의 어려움으로 인한 정체성 혼란, 의욕저하와 시행착오로 이어지는 정체성혼란의 부정적 영향, 자기탐구와 임상적 탐구를 통한 혼란극복시도, 자기 성장과 직업정체성의 성숙, 그리고 음악치료사로서의 견고한 정체성확립의 과정을 통해 음악치료사로서의 정체성을 형성해 나가는 것으로 나타났다.
