This paper tries to shed empirical light on the gaps in technology, innovation and R&D cooperation between large enterprises(LE) and small and medium sized enterprises(SME) in mechinery industry using firm-level data from Korean Manufacturing Statatistics over the period of 1991 to 2007 and from Korean Innovation Survey 2008. The main findings are as followings. First, the technology gap between LEs and SMEs has increased constantly since 1998. Second, LEs have higher likelihood to accomplish both product and process innovations than SMEs. Third, the innovation performed by LEs is more radical than that of SMEs when the radicalness is measured in terms of innovative impacts on sales and cost reduction. Lastly, SMEs carry out less R&D cooperation with suppliers and customers than LEs.

본 연구는 기계 산업을 대상으로 중소기업과 대기업간 기술격차, 혁신격차 및 기술협력 격차 등에 대해 분석하였다. 대기업과 중소기업 간의 기술격차는 1991년에서 2006년까지의 광공업통계자료를 이용하여 Jorgenson 기술격차지수 추정을 통해 살펴보았고, 기술혁신 및 기술협력에 있어서의 기업규모 간 차이는 2008년 한국 제조업부문 대상의 기술혁신조사(Korean Innovation Survey)의 기업자료(firm level data)를 이용하여 분석하였다. 주요 실증분석 결과는 첫째, 기계 산업에서 대기업과 중소기업 간 기술격차는 1998년 이후 지속적으로 확대되었고 둘째, 기술혁신에 있어서는 제품혁신 및 공정혁신 모두에서 대기업이 중소기업 보다 혁신가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 뿐만 아니라 혁신 정도(radicalness of innovation)에 있어서도 대기업이 우위에 있는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 제품혁신과 공정혁신 모두에서 중소기업의 혁신가능성이 낮은 것으로 나타났지만, 공정혁신 보다는 제품혁신에서 더욱 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 기술혁신에 긍정적 영향을 주는 기업외부와의 기술협력에 있어서도 중소기업이 대기업보다 열위에 있으며, 구체적으로는 수요기업과 공급업체와의 기술협력 수준이 낮은 것으로 나타났다.
