In the eighteenth century, Edmund Burke contributed to the aesthetics of sublimity by defining the aesthetic ranges of the sublime and beautiful for the first time. He specified the concept of sublimity, which was a subordinate concept until then, and made expansion of the concept to one that has alternative value in contemporary aesthetic studies possible. Burke's concept of the sublime created a basis of discussion to establish and expand the idea thereafter, from the sublime of Kant to the avant-gard sublime aesthetics of Lyotard. Repositioning and categorization of the subjects that create this sublime emotion as explained by Burke can lead to five architectural categories - size, materials, form, tectonics, and light. Sublime can be applied to contemporary architecture in terms of size with comparatively large sizes and individual grandeur, it can be applied to materials with unexpected combinations and textures, it can be applied to form with geometrical simplicity, it can be applied to tectonics with marvelous tectonics, and lastly, it can be applied to light with intermittent lights.
