The theatrical market in South Korea has been rapidly growing and accordingly, the numbers of theatre venues have increased. However, there are problems remained in securing professionals working at a theatre. Therefore, this study discusses operating theatres and the theatre employees in the Western theatrical markets, focused on the Broadway and tries to find better ways to enhance the professionalism of theatrical employees.
The Broadway theatres, both commercial and not-for-profit theatres, employ qualified staffs with a lot of knowledge and experiences on their own jobs. Each employee is usually taken care of by a labor union and it helps to keep his or her quality and professionalism on the specific job.
To run a theatre effectively, it is important to have the proper staffs for each department including theatre management, season programming, education, audience development, membership/subscription and etc. It is also necessary for all the staffs to precisely understand the specifications of each profession and improve the structure of an organization. In addition, the professional education programs should be offered continuously for the current and potential theatrical employees.

국내 공연예술 시장의 확대는 공연장의 양적 팽창이라는 고무적인 결과를 양산하고는 있지만 공연장 내 전문인력의 확보라는 과제를 남기고 있다. 이에, 본 논문은 미국 브로드웨이의를 중심으로 해외 공연장의 운영실태와 전문인력 고용의 현황을 살펴봄으로써 국내 공연예술 인력의 전문성 확보를 위한 방안을 모색해 보았다.
브로드웨이의 공연장의 인력 구성은 운영 형태(상업 또는 비영리)에 따라 배치면에서 다소 차이를 보이기는 하지만, 기본적으로 해당 분야에 대한 전문지식과 경험이 충분한 전문인력을 중심으로 이루어진다. 다양한 분야의 인력들이 철저하게 노동조합으로 관리되는 부분 역시 공연 관련 인력의 전문성을 확보하는데 주요한 요인이 된다.
양적인 증대만큼이나 공연제작, 운영, 교육프로그램 육성, 개발, 관객 계발, 회원 관리 등 공연장의 다양한 프로그램이 보다 효율적, 체계적으로 운영되기 위해서는 적절한 전문인력의 고용, 배치의 필요성이 보다 강조되어야 한다. 이를 위해서는 공연장 내 직무의 세분화 및 명확한 개념에 대한 정리가 선행되어야 하며, 각 직무별 업무분장을 보다 세밀하게 구분하는 등 공연장 조직 운영의 개선이 필요하다. 또한 전문 인력의 양성과 배치를 위해 실무능력 배양을 위한 다양한 교육 프로그램의 확충이 필요하며 현장 인력의 지속적인 재교육 방안도 모색되어야 하겠다.
