The analysis of economic impact on the theatres in Daehangno distirct provides solid evidence of value of performing arts, especially economic value of the theatres in Daehangno distirct. This thesis analyzes economic impact on the theatres in Daehangno distirct, based on the survey on the performing arts.
The thesis demonstrates the background and actual conditions of the theatres in Daehangno distirct, as well as the importance of the theatres in Daehangno distirct as a mecca of performing arts. It also touches theatres' operational difficulties due to the increase in rent and discovers that the study based on scientific approach would be necessary to prove the importance of theatres in Daehangno distirct. In the thesis, the case study of the economic impact on the theatres in Broadway in U.S.A. and West End in England, equivalent to Daehangno distirct, was conducted.
The Economic impact analysis adjusted to the conditions of Daehangno distirct in the thesis estimates the economic impact through statistical methodology and input-output analysis.
The thesis shows that the theatres in Daehangno distirct makes direct and indirect economic impact on the local community. Direct impact is 76,132,418,000won; visitor spending 61,179,621,000 won; show expenses 4,246,594,000won; theatre expenses 10,706,203,000won.
Indirect impact includes the knock-on effect 135,515,704,000 won, value added inducement impact 67,757,852,000 won and 1,039/billion won employment.
The theatres in Daehangno distirct does not have significant economic value so far, but they have significant socioeconomic value by playing a main role of local revitalization and commercialization. About 25% of all theatres in Seoul(70 in 2006) are gathered in Daehangno distirct. Daehangno distirct is considered as offBroadway, and innovative and cutting-edge theatres or musicals from small to medium size are staged every year.
Nonetheless, there are still impediments to the prosperity of Daehangno distirct; superannuated facilities of theatres with being exposed to accidents, lack of parking lots, and civic
demonstrations on weekends around Daehangno distirct. Commercialization, rent increase and insubstantial tax benefits are already mentioned above. To improve such problems, I suggest that legal and institutional support will be created and the study will be continued to solidify and strengthen my thesis; analysis of economic impact on the theatres in Daehangno distirct. I hope such study will expand its scope from performing arts to whole arts sector.
