The purpose of this study is to point out problems of liberal-democratic ideology which the democratic citizenship as the objective of social studies assumes and to explore the orientation of citizenship education for real democracy. In contemporary neo-liberalistic perspective, democracy is considered as procedural democracy or formal democracy for the guarantee and promotion of economic liberalism. For the pursuit of real democracy, political liberalism and political equality as governance by the people must be secured. Modern democracy by birth is the empty space of power by the result of democratic revolution and thereby the site of hegemonic struggles. Democracy is not only an empty siginifier as general principle of politicla equality, but also open system of disharmony and tension as hegemonic struggles by division and antagonism of political subjects. Democracy as empty space of power is in-between hybrid space of division, antagonism and disharmony, citizen as political subject is located in that discoursive space. Accordingly the identity of democratic citizens is hybrid identification constituted contextually in that discourse, social studies have to make students hybrid-socialization.

본 논문은 사회과교육 목표로서의 민주시민성이 가정하고 있는 자유민주주의적 이데올로기의 문제점을 지적하고 진정한 민주주의를 위한 시민성 교육 방안에 대해 탐색하는데 그 목적을 두었다. 현대의 신자유주의적 입장에서 민주주의는 경제적 자유주의를 보장하고 촉진하기 위한 제도적 장치로서 절차적 민주주의 또는 형식적 민주주의와 다르지 않다. 실질적인 민주주의를 추구하기 위해서는 정치적 자유주의와 인민의 지배라는 정치적 평등을 담보해야 한다. 근대 민주주의는 태생적으로 혁명적 결과에 의해 권력의 텅 빈 공간이 됨으로써 헤게모니 투쟁 공간으로 자리매김하였다. 민주주의는 정치적 평등의 일반적 원칙을 추구하는 텅 빈 기표로서 인민을 구성하는 정치적 주체들 간의 분열과 적대에 의한 헤게모니적 투쟁 공간으로서 부조화와 긴장의 열린 체계이다. 권력의 텅 빈 공간으로서의 민주주의는 분열과 적대, 부조화 사이에 낀, 모호하고 비결정적인 혼성적 공간이며, 정치적 주체로서의 시민은 이러한 담론적 공간에 위치하고 있다. 따라서 민주 시민의 정체성은 이러한 담론적 공간 속에서 맥락적으로 이루어지는 혼성적 동일시이기 때문에 사회과교육은 이를 위해 혼성사회화가 이루어질 수 있도록 해야 한다.
