ocial phobia or social anxiety disorder is a common psychological disorder that may impair diverse social functions. Cognitive-behavioral model of social anxiety suggests that various information processing biases play crucial roles in the generation and maintenance of social anxiety. Interpretation bias, one of the information biases in social anxiety, refers to the cognitive tendency toward negative interpretation of social situations and emotional stimuli. Previous studies using social scenario paradigm suggest that social anxiety is characterized by negative interpretation of social situation. On the other hand, on-line experiments adopted with experimental cognitive psychology have provided that social anxiety groups are different from normal controls in terms of the lack of positive interpretation. Further, the recent empirical studies using the pictures of facial expression as experimental stimuli have revealed inconsistent findings, depending on the experimental paradigm. This paper reviews and integrates the diverse empirical findings across studies. Finally clinical implications as well as future research directions are discussed.

사회공포증 혹은 사회불안장애는 흔한 심리적 장애이며, 다양한 사회적 기능에 손상을 야기하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 사회공포증의 발병 및 유지 기제와 관련하여 인지적 요소가 이에 결정적인 역할을 한다는 인지-행동 모형이 널리 받아들여지고 있다. 사회공포증의 인지-행동 모형에서는 사회 및 정서 자극에 대한 다양한 인지적 편향을 사회공포증의 발생과 유지에 주요한 기제로 설명하고 있다. 이 중 해석 편향은 사회 및 정서 자극에 대해 부정적으로 해석하는 경향성을 의미한다. 사회공포증의 해석 편향과 관련한 경험적 연구들을 살펴보면 일관성 없는 결과들을 보이고 있으며, 이는 각 연구들에서 사용하고 있는 실험 자극과 실험 패러다임의 차이와 관련이 큰 것으로 보인다. 사회적 상황을 기술한 시나리오를 활용하여 해석 경향성을 측정하는 연구에서는 사회공포증 집단이 사회적 상황에 대한 부정적 해석 편향을 보이는 것으로 확인되었다. 반면 반응시간을 측정하는 방식으로 해석 편향을 확인하는 실험 연구에서는 사회공포증 집단이 사회적 상황에 대한 긍정적 해석 편향을 보이지 않는 특성을 보였다. 또한 얼굴 표정을 정서 자극으로 활용한 연구에서는 실험 패러다임에 따라 각기 다른 결과들이 나타나는 경향을 보였다. 이 논문에서는 이와 같은 선행 연구들을 개관하였고 그 결과들을 종합하였으며, 추후 연구 과제에 대해 논의하였다.
