Ha-seo (河西) Kim In-hoo (金麟厚: 1510~1560) criticized Seo Kyǒng-dǒk's intuitionism; Yi Hang's theory of oneness of li (理) and chi (氣); Luo Qinshun's theory of moral mind and human mind. He also criticized Yi Hwang's theory of four beginnings and seven emotions influenced by ontological dualism. In contrast to Yi Hwang, he thought that four beginnings and seven emotions took form by the one course in which nature (性) became real feeling (情) through the co-issuance and unity of li and chi. He also thought that the determining factor of good and evil was whether or not the consequence of emotional activity was in harmony with the environment and object. His view showed an epistemological perspective that differed from the ontological doctrines of those days. After Kim In-hoo's view was transmitted to Ki Dae-seung, Ki was able to stimulate Yi Hwang to fomulate the new epistemological theory that emphasizes a priori character of li. In this paper, I'd like to argue that Kim In-hoo played a role of catalyst in the era of theoretical formation of Korean Neo-Confucianism where the two opposed positions took shape as the epistemological theory.

하서 김인후는 서경덕의 기일원론에 입각한 직관주의적 공부론, 이항의 이기(理氣)를 하나로 보는 일물(一物)설, 나흠순의 인심도심체용설, 그리고 ‘존재론적 이원론’에 영향 받은 이황의 󰡔천명도설󰡕의 사단칠정설을 비판한다. 특히, 그는 사단과 칠정이 모두 성(性)의 원리와 경험적 기가 함께 발현하고 결합함으로써 정(情)이 되는, 하나의 경로를 통해서 이루어진다고 보았으며, 선악은 감정적 행위의 외적 규범에의 조화[和]와 부조화[過不及] 여부에 의해 결정된다고 보았다. 이러한 견해들은 기존의 존재론적 학설들과는 분명히 다른, 지각론적 관점이라고 할 수 있다. 필자는 이러한 김인후의 입장이 기대승에게 이어지고, 기대승은 사단칠정논변을 통해 이황으로 하여금 선험적 리를 중시하는 새로운 지각론을 구성하도록 자극했다고 본다. 김인후는 조선성리학 이론의 형성기에 있어서 이황과 이이에 의해 수립되는 지각론의 상반된 두 입장이 태동하는 데 있어 촉매제 역할을 했다는 것이다.
