Recently, ual development in the public facilities not only elicits harmony with urban environment, but also helps communication with being smooth as a cultural element. However, our country’s public facilities are concentrated development on the specific subject, thereby being in the real situation that the balanced development in visual element is insufficient. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to promote visual development in the isolated public facilities. It researched into developmental direction, and expansion in function and role of the visual aspect, with limiting the subject to the manhole lid. First of all, through prior researches and documentary materials at home and abroad, the theoretical background was examined. As for empirical research, it collected materials by region at home and abroad through internet survey, and examined its present status. Finally, it comparatively analyzed characteristics by graphic type in manhole lid at home and abroad, and elicited merits and demerits. As a result of research, as for graphic in manhole lid, the graphic type could be known to possibly have more positive influence upon forming image of being involved in urban identity, compared to pattern type and sidewalk block type. This is because the symbolic graphing has influence upon delivering information and inducing communication. This study makes it play the more expanded role beyond physical function by pursuing developmental direction of manhole lid graphic. Through this, the aim is further to arrange an opportunity that can recognize importance of visual function and role in the public facilities. ducts are those new generation consumers.

공공디자인은 도시공간을 통해 소비되며, 도시의 정체성에 관여한다. 공공 시설물의 시각적 발전은 도시 환경과의 조화를 이끌어 낼뿐만 아니라 문화적 요소로서 커뮤니케이션이 원활할 수 있도록 돕는다. 하지만 우리나라의 공공시설물은 특정 대상에 집중된 불균형적 발전과 양적 증가에 치중하여, 소외된 시설물의 시각적 발전이 상대적으로 미흡한 실정이다. 연구 목적은 소외된 공공 시설물의 시각적 발전을 도모하기 위해 대상을 맨홀 뚜껑으로 한정하고, 시각적 측면에서 도시 공공시설물에서의 디자인적 가치향상 발전 방향을 제시하는데 있다. 연구방식은 먼저 선행연구와 국내,외 문헌자료를 통해 이론적 배경을 살펴보았다. 실증적 연구는 현장 조사와 인터넷 조사를 통해 국내,외 자료를 수집, 맨홀 뚜껑의 디자인 현황과 그래픽 유형별 특성을 중점적으로 비교분석하고, 장,단점을 도출하였다. 연구 결과, 맨홀 뚜껑의 그래픽은 패턴형, 그래픽형, 보도블럭형으로 나뉘며, 패턴형과 보도블럭형에 비해 그래픽형이 도시의 정체성에 관여하는 이미지 형성에 있어 더 많은 긍정적 영향을 끼칠 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이는 상징적 도식화가 정보를 전달하고, 커뮤니케이션을 유도하는데 영향을 미치기 때문이라 해석된다. 이를 감안한다면 국내의 맨홀 뚜껑의 경우 그래픽형의 도입이 필요하다 판단된다. 더불어 그래픽의 상징적 도식화에 있어 국가적 요소로는 대표적 문화재의 형상을 지역적 요소로는 관광 명소와 명물을 표출하는 것이 효과적이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 맨홀 뚜껑 물리적 기본 기능 및 공공 시설물에서의 시각적 그래픽의 역할과 발전 방향을 모색하여 도시 정체성 확립에 기여하고자 하였다. 그러나 사례조사에 한계성, 지역적으로 광범위하지 못한 아쉬움이 있었다. 향후 심층적 연구가 지속되길 바란다.
