The purpose of this research is to investigate Kumano Kodo in Japan give some useful information to domestic road management. For achieving this purpose, history of Kumano Kodo, Kumano Kodo operation system was studied trough the staffs' interview and suggest some possibilities to the domestic road management in seven ways. First, it is necessary for aware of the changes to the road. the road is not forever but changeable. Second, it is necessary to make ritual acts. Third, for the improvement of road management it must apply storyscape's view. Fourth, making experiential environments based on story. Fifth, it is necessary to improve environments of tourist information system. Sixth, it is necessary to develop storyteller programs for forming the regional identity. Finally, It requires tourist road organizations' network system. Results of this research expected to give some useful implications for improving systems of tourist road management in Korea.

본 연구는 현재 활발하게 진행되고 있는 국내 길 관련사업의 발전적 운영관리 방향을 모색하고자 시도되었다. 이를 위해 세계문화유산으로서 오랜 동안에 걸쳐 운영관리체계를 발전시켜온 일본의 쿠마노코도를 벤치마킹 대상으로 삼았다. 연구 목적의 달성을 위해 코작이 제시한 벤치마킹 방법론을 활용하였으며, 자료수집은 문헌연구, 심층인터뷰, 현장조사 등을 통한 삼각화를 모색하였다. 특히, 심층인터뷰는 쿠마노코도의 나카헤치 구간을 담당하고 있는 타나베시청에서 진행되었으며, 현장조사는 나카헤치 구간에서 직접 실시되었다. 연구 결과, 쿠마노코도는 긴 시간을 두고 관리가 진행되어 왔으며, 관련 지자체들간의 적극적 협력, 보존과 진흥의 조화, 알기 쉬운 안내체계, 공정여행의 실천 등이 특징적인 사항으로 나타났다. 이를 바탕으로 길에 대한 인식 전환, 의례행위의 개발, 스토리 스케이프 논리의 개발, 스토리텔링형 체험환경 조성, 정보환경 개선, 길 스토리텔러 육성, 협력 네트워크 체계 구축 등의 제안을 도출할 수 있다.
