The Effects of Parenting Attitude on School Adjustment and Self-esteem of Child and Early Adolescent from Multicultural Families

Abstract : The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of parenting attitude(warmth, rejection/restriction, permissiveness/nonintervention) on school adjustment(general school life, relationship with teacher, learning attitude, school rule, relationship with peer, school activity) and self-esteem of early adolescent from multicultural family. The subjects were 152 students in 4th, 5th, 6th grade of elementary school and 1st grade of middle school from multicultural families in rural areas of Jonnam province. They completed School Life Adjustment Questionnaire and Self-esteem Scale. The results were as follows: First, maternal warmth had greater effects on general school life than maternal rejection/restriction. Only maternal warmth had effects on all the subscales of school adjustment except on relationship with peer. Maternal rejection/restriction had effects on relationship with peer. Second, paternal warmth had effects on general school life, relationship with teacher, school rule and school activity while paternal rejection/restriction had no effects on school adjustment. Paternal permissiveness /nonintervention had effects on learning attitude, school rule, relationship with peer and school activity. Third, only maternal warmth had effects on general school life whereas maternal warmth and maternal permissiveness/nonintervention had effects on relationship with teacher. Maternal warmth, paternal rejection/restriction, paternal permissiveness /nonintervention had effects on learning attitude. Related to school rule, paternal permissiveness/nonintervention had greater effects than maternal warmth and paternal warmth. Maternal rejection/restriction had greater effects on relationship with peer than paternal permissiveness /nonintervention. Maternal warmth had greater effects on school activity than paternal permissiveness /nonintervention. Fourth, both maternal and paternal parenting attitude had effects on adolescent's self-esteem. Among maternal parenting attitude, maternal rejection/restriction had effects on adolescent's self-esteem while paternal warmth and rejection/restriction had effects on adolescent's self-esteem. Fifth, related to relative effects of maternal and paternal parenting attitude on adolescent's self-esteem, only maternal rejection/restriction was a significant factor
