What is the real, the true church? Could it be said that a true church without diakonia could exist? If this is not the case - what then the true, the really comprehensive church and how should diakonia be created as part of the church community. That is, in the world outside the church? Generally speaking, diakonia is constituent part of the church "kerygma" and "koinonia". Therefore a theological reflexion on the diaconal activity in the church community is needed, so that the church can be well on the way to achieving its goal and to preventing diakonia from going off the biblical path of the church. Paul Philippi has dealt with the theology of diakonia as a practical theology in connection with the church in this spirit. The starting point of his theology of diakonia is rooted in the "christo-centric diakonia". Philippi aims for a christology and ecclesiology of diakonia. In his opinion diakonia is based on christology which means that Jesus has come into the world in order to rescue the world by serving it. Jesus Christ is the last revealer of God who serves mankind as "Diakonos" and "Doulos" in order to grant it eternal life and freedom. Therefore the church based on Christ must be established and organized as a serving church community. Philippi has called diakonia "nota ecclesiae". The Church must put to practice God's intervention action becoming apparent to the world through Jesus Christ service demanding to help the poor and the deprived in and through church community. Consequently Philippi combines diakonia in the church community with the Order of the Diakon, so that church diakonia can be put to action continually and reasonably. The Order of the Diakon is not only concerned with action determined by love, but with joined and mutual church action based on diakonia centered on Christ. When Philippi refers to the true and real Church, he thinks, most of all, of the diaconical Church, gathering and rallying its forces to be send out in to the world in order to help the lowest and the most deprived. This means that diakonia must be deeply rooted in the Church, thus creating diaconical image or profile of the Church which is definitely distinguishable from the state welfare system. To summit up one may say that Philippi has the great merit of directing our theological interest to diakonia and its being rooted in christology and ecclesiology and of connecting his research to the lutheran tradition.

우리는 과연 디아코니아 없는 교회를 참다운 교회라고 할 수 있는가? 만일 그렇지 않다면, 디아코니아는 무엇이며, 어떻게 구체적으로 나타나야하는가? 일반적으로 말해서 디아코니아는 케리그마와 코이노니아와 함께 교회의 본질요소라고 할 수 있다. 특히 복음에 기초한 교회의 본질로서 디아코니아는 구체적인 실천활동으로 신학적인 성찰을 필요로 한다. 디아코니아에 대한 신학적인 성찰은 교회의 실천을 올바르게 이끌어주며, 무엇보다도 디아코니아활동을 교회와 밀접하게 관련시켜 줄 수 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 파울 필리피는 교회의 디아코니아활동을 기독론적-교회론에 기초시킨 디아코니아신학을 정립하였다. 그의 디아코니아신학의 단초는 “그리스도 중심의 디아코니아”에 놓여있다. 그는 섬기시는 그리스도에 기초해서 디아코니아의 출발점을 삼았다. 그리스도에 대한 신앙은 하나님의 뜻과 본질을 최종적으로 계시하신 그리스도를 믿는 것이며, 필리피의 그리스도중심의 디아코니아는 교회공동체 안에 어려움에 있는 약자들을 돌보는 연대성의 디아코니아활동이다. 필리피는 오늘날 교회공동체의 함께 더불어 사는 사회적인 삶을 그리스도중심의 기독론으로써 섬김과 봉사의 삶을 목표하고 있다. 이는 교회 공동체가 디아코니아 공동체가 되도록 하는 것과 동시에 디아코니아는 교회공동체의 디아코니아가 되도록 하는 것이다. 따라서 필리피는 디아코니아를 “교회의 표지”(nota ecclesiae)로 보았다. 필리피에게 있어서 디아코니아가 구체화되는 것은 우선적으로 교회안에서 약자들을 돌보는 것이며, 사회 속에서 돌보는 활동은 이차적이다. 그에 의하면, 교회공동체로 “모이는 것”(Sammlung)이 세상으로 “보내는 것”(Sendung)보다 앞선다. 교회가 먼저 진정한 그리스도중심의 섬기는 교회공동체가 될 때에 타자를 위해 섬기는 존재가 될 수 있다. 이처럼 그는 디아코니아활동을 교회 안으로 들여놓았다. 파울 필리피는 교회공동체의 디아코니아활동을 위해서 교회안에 “집사직무”(Diakonenamt)를 세우도록 요구하였다. 즉, 교회의 디아코니아는 전담집사를 세워서 위기에 빠진 창조물들을 공동 사회적으로 돌보는 책임활동이어야 한다. 여기서 집사직무는 돌보는 활동자체가 관건이 아니라, 그리스도중심의 하나님나라 공동체를 실현하기 위한 직무로서 신학적인 의미를 가진다. 필리피의 교회공동체 디아코니아활동은 교회공동체의 중심을 이루는 복음 선포의 말씀과 성만찬을 통해 그리스도중심의 고유성을 각인시켜주는 예배에 뿌리를 두며, 이는 예배의식 없는 일반사회복지활동과는 근본적으로 차이를 이룬다. 종합하자면, 필리피는 교회의 디아코니아 위상을 현대 국가적인 사회복지와 구분시키며 교회가 디아코니아의 정체성을 유지하면서 국가사회복지와 공존하는 관계를 갖게 해준다. 그는 루터의 전통에 서서 교회의 활동을 사회적인 차원으로까지 확장시켜준 것이다. 결과적으로 필리피의 기독론과 교회론에 기초한 디아코니아에 대한 기획은 신학적으로 열매 맺는 공헌을 하였다.
