The method and form of preaching that delivers the Word of God has changed with the times. In some cases the change was caused by the preachers voluntarily, but in other cases Christian preaching was changed by the critical consciousness that occurred in the field of preaching. We are now confronted with a new generation in homiletics. The traditional homiletical theory and method has ruled the pulpit of the Christian church for 1,500 years since St. Augustine established it, bring the principles of classical rhetoric into Christian preaching. But the various situational changes occurred at the end of the 20 century which made Christian preaching no longer bound to the traditional preaching. These changes included the emergence of narrative theology and biblical hermeneutics from the historical-critical method to the rhetorical method, the rapid changes in the social and cultural situations, and changes in consciousness of the congregation hearing the sermon. Now this era is clearly asking for a new method in preaching and the theologians of homiletics and preachers should answer it. It is the New Homiletics Movement that emerged in North America to respond to this requirement of the times. The New Homiletics Movement has begun to overcome the limitation of traditional preaching and reflect more the present situational factors that we are facing through the sermon. They turned their attention to the form of the sermon first and developed story or narrative preaching. And they found out the importance of the listener's role in preaching, recognized them as partners of preaching, and insisted that preaching is a journey with the listener. This article focuses on understanding the New Homiletics Movement as a new paradigm shift in Christian preaching emerging in our era. For this purpose I examined the background of the New Homiletics Movement, studied its historical development and the homiletical theory and method of three representative theologians in the New Homiletics camp, Fred B. Craddock, Eugene L. Lowry, and David Buttrick, and evaluated the contribution and limitation of the New Homiletics Movement. In the latter half of this article I studied its application in the Korean church. Hopefully this work will be a contribution to give the Korean church a perspective and insight for preaching in the future.

하나님의 말씀을 전달하는 방식(method and form)은 시대를 따라 그 모습을 다르게 해왔다. 어떤 경우는 설교자들의 자발적인 노력에 의해서, 어떤 경우는 설교 현장에서 일어나는 위기의식 때문에 기독교 설교는 변하지 않으면 안 되었던 것이다. 지금 우리의 시대는 설교학의 대전환기에 들어서 있다. 이제는 ‘일방적으로 전달하는’ 설교 대신에 회중에게 ‘들려지는’ 설교로, 수동적이기 보다는 회중이 능동적으로 듣기를 원하는 설교로, 그리고 설교자 혼자 외치는 무대에 회중이 함께 참여하는 장이 열려질 수 있어야 한다. 우리가 사는 시대가 변했고, 문화가 변했고, 거기에 따른 인간의 사고 의식이 변했으며, 역시 이러한 경향은 설교를 듣는 회중들도 변하게 만들었다. 이제 기독교 설교자들은 이런 변화된 상황을 누구보다 더 정확하게 인식하면서, 거기에 적절한 대응을 해야만 할 때다. 이러한 시대적 상황 속에서 20세기 후반 북미를 중심으로 하여 일어난 “새로운 설교학 운동”은 이제 기독교 설교의 새로운 지평을 여는 계기를 제공하게 되었다. 따라서 이에 대한 설교학적 이론과 방법론들을 이해하고 연구하는 것은 이 시대 신학과 설교학 분야에 매우 필요한 작업이 될 것이라고 본다. 한국 교회에는 1990년대 후반 이후 설교학자들의 노력에 의해서 새로운 설교학적 변화에 대한 이론과 방법론들이 다양하게 소개되어 왔다. 그리고 지금은 관심 있는 많은 설교자들에 의해 설교현장인 교회에서 적용되고 있다. 이는 변화에 적응하려는 한국 교회의 긍정적 모습이라고 하겠다. 따라서 본 연구는 이러한 시대적 상황에서 현대 설교학의 새로운 변화에 대한 한국 교회의 이해와 함께 이것을 어떻게 적용하고 있으며, 또한 어떻게 전망하고 있는지에 대한 분석과 평가를 시도하고자 하였다.
