"Is it impossible to preach without the Text?" This paper offers one answer to this question. This thesis will propose that "preaching without the Text" is necessary in certain circumstances. It will reveal that this method has already been put in use (in various forms) in the field of missionary work, and will attempt to discuss the method's potential in the contemporary Church setting. In his book, Mission Method in Manchuria, Scotland born missionary to China John Ross explains a unique form of “street preaching” that does not deal with the Bible Text. American missionary to Korea Charles Allen Clark too, discusses a similar method of preaching in a book he adopted and translated (Homiletic Lectures of Rev. Herrick Johnson) and in also his own book (Lectures on Homiletics). This paper focuses on this unique form of preaching, while contemplating on what background such a preaching method may come from and what role it may play. It also questions whether "preaching without the Text" is an alternative found by the post-modern society in which the Bible Text in increasingly loosing its authority. However, the main goal of this paper is not to encourage "preaching without the Text." It is also not to undermine the traditional "Textual Sermon" or "Expository Sermon." Instead, this thesis suggests acknowledging the potential of "preaching without the Text" and making an appropriate framework for contemporary preaching. This topic may be controversial. But it is the writer's belief that this paper will be able to introduce a new potential and widen the perspectives of those in the mission field.

“성경본문을 사용하지 않는 설교는 불가능한 것인가?” 본 논문은 바로 이 질문에 대한 하나의 대답이다. 본 논문은 “탈본문(脫本文) 설교”가 상황에 따라 필요하다는 점과 더불어 선교적 현장에서 이미 여러 형태로 사용되어져 왔다는 점을 밝히고 이러한 "성경본문을 사용하지 않는 설교"의 형태가 오늘날의 현대교회에서 어떤 의미가 있는지에 대하여 논구하려는 하나의 시도라고 할 수 있다. 스코틀랜드 출신의 중국선교사였던 로스는 그의 책, 『만주선교방법론』(Mission Method in Manchuria)에서 성경에서 출발하지 않는 독특한 형태의 "노상설교(street preaching)"에 대하여 설명하고 있으며, 미국 출신의 한국선교사였던 곽안련(Charles Allen Clark) 역시 "탈본문(脫本文) 설교"의 여러 가지 형태들에 대하여 그가 편역한 책인 『강도요령』(Homiletic Lectures of Rev. Herrick Johnson)과 그의 책 『강도학』(Lectures on Homiletics)에서 다루고 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 독특한 형태의 설교들에 주목하면서 이러한 “탈본문(脫本文) 설교”가 어떠한 배경을 가지고 있는지, 그리고 어떠한 원칙을 갖고 있는지에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다. 그리고 이러한 “탈본문(脫本文) 설교”가 혹시 성경의 권위가 약화된 오늘의 포스트모던 사회 속에서 또 다른 하나의 설교의 대안은 아닌지에 대하여 숙고한다. 하지만, 본 논문의 목적은 “탈본문(脫本文) 설교”를 장려하고자 하는 것이 아니며, 동시에 성경본문을 적절한 방식으로 석의하고 해석하여 적용하는 기존의 ‘성경본문에서 출발하는 설교’의 틀을 무너뜨리고자 하는 것이 아니다. 도리어 “성경본문을 사용하지 않는 설교”의 필요성을 인식하고 그 가능성을 모색하고 보다 적절한 틀을 만들어 보자고 제안하려는데 있다. 특히 선교적 상황에 있는 목회자들에게 “탈본문(脫本文) 설교”의 의미와 가능성을 제안하려는 것이다.
