The Lord's Supper has been a special experience for worshipers for centuries of Christian history. However, many Bible scholars and well -intentioned Christians have argued about every dimension of the Lord's Supper. The sad reality of church history is that this special rite which the apostle Paul declared to be the "sacrament of the unity" was often just the opposite-a source of heated debate and argument. 1 Corinthians 8-11 Apostle Paul seems to be correcting a situation in the Corinthian church in which the members were misunderstanding and misusing the Lord's Supper. The way in which this puzzle can be put together is to put this situation in its historical context by examining the writings of that day and the history and customs which apply to ancient Corinth, as well as those of the Graeco-Roman world at large. It is the primary purpose of this paper to provide a historical context for the situation in Corinthians 8-11 as a means of being able to more accurately understand these words of Paul. After examinging the Greeks meals, the Roman meals, and religious customs in the Graeco-Roman world, some conclusions may be drawn on how this material may apply to 1 Corinthians 8-11. The historical context which has been articulated in this paper must now be applied to the communal meals problems in 1 Corinthians 8-11 Many have suggested that the love feast or communal meal is an element that should be restored in contemporary Christianity. The truth of the matter is that churches are facing an even more dangerous situation in that, like the Corinthians, many have emphasized the vertical component of the Lord's Supper to the point that brotherhood lies shattered . Now, as it was then, men will break out of their individual cells of meditation only by looking anew to the original meaning of the Lord's Supper and above all by giving heed to the word of Paul in 1 Corinthians 13 which are the highest rule and ultimate test of one's actions.

기독교역사에서 주의 만찬은 성도들에게 특별한 경험을 가지게 한다. 그러나 성서학자들과 많은 예배학자들은 성만찬의 의미와 방법등을 주제로 많은 논쟁과 토론을 벌였으며 그 결과는 교회사에서 개인별, 혹은 지역 및 국가별 더 나아 가서는 교파적으로 분열을 가져오는 결과를 초래하였다. 그러므로 표면적으로 보기에 사도바울은 고린도전서 8-11장 에서 고린도 교인들이 주의 만찬을 오해하여 이를 잘못 사용하고 있던 상황들을 바로잡으려고 한 것 같다. 이러한 문제와 더불어 고린도 교인들은 여전히 우상 숭배, 주의 만찬과 연관되어 행해지던 만찬 유형, 즉 “어떤 사람은 시장하고 어떤 사람은 취하고”(고린도전서 11:21)하는 문제를 가지고 있었다. 그리고 교인들 간에 전반적인 학대, 무시와 같은 문제들도 존재하고 있었다. 이러한 복잡한 상황은 역사적 맥락 속에서 살펴보게 될 때 비로소 보다 잘 이해할 수 있다. 본 논문의 주된 목적은 바울의 이러한 말들을 좀 더 정확히 밝히기 위해서 고린도전서 8-11장에 나타난 역사적 맥락과 종교적 상황에 대한 이해를 제공하는 것이다.. 본 논문에서 논의되었던 역사적，종교적 상황은 고린도전서 8-11장에 있었던 식탁교제의 문제점에 적용되어야 한다. 고린도 교회는 여러 가지 문제점에 시달렸다. 교회 구성원들은 다양한 사회 경제적 수준의 사람들로 구성되었음이 분명하며 그것으로 인해 그 모임에 갈등이 야기되었다. 각각의 문제점들이 어떤 점에서 식사문제와 연관되어 있지만 그 문제점 모두는 사랑의 부족과 서로에 대한 배려의 부족 때문에 발생한 것이다. 그 문제의 핵심은 많은 사람들의 형제애가 산산이 깨어질 정도로 주의 만찬의 수직적인 요소들을 강조하여왔다는 것이다. 현재도 당시처럼 사람들은 주의 만찬의 본래 의미를 새롭게 바라보고 무엇보다도 고린도전서 13장에서 바울이 말한 것 즉 사람의 행동에 있어서 최고의 규칙과 궁극적인 시험이라고 볼 수 있는 사랑이라는 말에 주의를 기울임으로써 자신의 개인적인 생각의 틀을 깨고 나와야 할 것이다.
