The purposes of the present study were to investigate the amalgamation of character education and human-rights education through enlarging concept of character & human- rights education. Pro-character education camp and Pro-human right education camp have much conflict owing to controversial concept. But character without human right or human right without character is all a incomplete concept. Two contrary ideas as such go to the extreme of character education and human rights education. If it is so, how shall we blend the conflicting concept? The ‘character’ equipped with moral entitlement as humankind or the human rights with basic rights as humankind is not to sit at opposite pole. Therefore, the conflict of them results in a tendency of pro-character education or pro-human right education in educational content and method. We must require the association of new concept, for example, ‘rights-duty’. It enables to blend this holistic concept. When we are to make a match with character and human rights will form both human rights with character and character with human rights. Now, we ought to open the new horizon through holistic amalgamation.

그동안 전통적 인격교육은 자율성을 가진 민주적 인격보다는 순종적 성격을 갖게 하는데 관심을 두었으며, 이러한 순종적 성격은 인격교육의 정착을 어렵게 하였다. 기존의 인격교육은 인권과 정의에 대한 가치나 민주주의보다는 개체적 인격을 강조하였기에 강제적 규율이나 순응 그리고 권위주의를 극복하지 못하였다. 다른 한편으로 기존의 인권교육은 권익의 요구나 권력의 부조리만을 지나치게 중시하는 경향을 보임으로써 자신의 인격수양을 게을리한 나머지 언어나 행동에 있어 폭력적 태도를 보이는 경우를 많이 보게 된다. 이렇게 인격교육을 중시하는 진영과 인권교육을 중시하는 진영은 서로 대립을 보이며 갈등을 보여 왔다. 그런데 인권없는 인격교육이나 인격없는 인권교육은 모두 불완전한 개념으로서 편향성을 보일 수 있다. 이렇게 편향성을 보이는 인격교육과 인권교육의 극단을 어떻게 융합할 수 있는가? 융합의 대안은 인간으로서 도덕적 자격을 갖추는 ‘인격’이나 인간으로서 침해받지 않을 기본적 권리인 ‘인권’이 서로 대척점에 있을 개념은 아니고 공존이 가능한 개념으로 자리매김하는 것이다. 나아가 인격교육과 인권교육의 영역 확장을 통해 인권적 인격교육이나 인격적 인권교육을 모색할 때 양자의 홀리스틱(포용적·포괄적) 융합이 가능할 것이다.
