The primary purpose of this study is to examine the effect of altruism as a major
issue of positive psychology on happiness and peer acceptance. The participants were 449 Korean high school students (male=230, female=219). 447 questionnaires excepting 2 insincere answered questionnaires were analyzed by SPSS(Version 12.0). The results of t-test were as follow. The students who got the higher altruistic score were happier than the students who got the lower altruistic score. Also, the students who got the higher altruistic score were more popular and acceptable among peers than the students who got the lower altruistic score. The correlations between altruism and happiness, between altruism and peer acceptance are significant, but the correlation between happiness and peer acceptance is not significant. The results suggested that developing the altruism is more necessary for Korean adolescents education rather than focusing on the their problem-behaviors in oder to improve happiness and peer acceptance. We discussed several implications and limitation of this study and proposed future research.

이 연구에서는 최근 긍정심리학의 한 주제로 주목 받고 있는 이타주의가 청소년들의 주관적 행복감과 또래 수용도에 어떠한 관련성을 가지고 있는지에 대해 살펴보았다. 수도권 소재 남녀고등학생 449명이 이타주의와 주관적 행복감, 또래 수용도를 측정하는 질문지에 응답하였다. 불성실하게 응답한 2부를 제외한 447부가 분석에 사용되었다. 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이타주의 성향이 높은 집단이 그렇지 않은 집단에 비해 주관적 행복감의 수준이 유의미하였다. 둘째, 이타주의 성향이 높은 집단이 그렇지 않은 집단에 비해 또래 수용도가 유의미하였다. 셋째, 이타주의와 주관적 행복감 간에는 정적으로 유의미한 상관이 있었고, 이타주의와 또래 수용도 사이에도 정적으로 유의미한 상관이 있었다. 하지만 또래 수용도와 주관적 행복감에는 유의미한 관련성을 볼 수 없었다. 이 연구 결과를 통해 볼 때, 청소년의 심리의 내적․외적 건강성을 높이기 위해 그들의 문제 행동에 집중하기보다, 이타주의 성향을 개발시키도록 교육하고 도와주는 것이 청소년 교육에 필요하다.
