Discussion about the rational moral approach and traditional character education often becomes polarized. The two camps use terms of references that, in theoretical or ideological commitments, appear incommensurate or evoke different frames of understanding.
Traditional character education focuses on the inculcation of virtues traits of character as the proper aim of education. In contrast, rational moral education seeks to facilitate the consensus according to canons of fairness. The debate has often taken on an either/or quality that has obscured common ground and integrative possibilities. For example, thickness and thinness of personhood, act-ethics and agent-ethics, rule ethics and character ethics, minimal ethics and maximal ethics, community by agreement and community by perfection, justice ethics and caring ethics. An alternative integration to two ethical education has been proposed in an attempt to reconcile and combine the insight of traditional character education and rational moral education. In this article, a third way, integrative, holistic ethical education will be introduced.

규칙윤리는 합리적 인지발달론적 접근과 결합되어 있고, 덕윤리는 전통적 인격교육의 접근과 연결되어 서로 대립적 입장을 보여 왔다. 덕윤리와 전통적 인격교육은 인격의 덕성적 자질을 함양하고 주입하는 데 초점을 두고 있고, 규칙윤리와 합리적 인지발달론은 공정성의 교의에 따라 합의를 촉진하는 데 초점을 두고 있다. 양자의 윤리학적 관점의 차이는 사람됨의 ‘두터움’과 ‘얇음’, 행위의 윤리와 행위자의 윤리 통합, 최소윤리와 최대윤리의 접목, 합의적 공동체와 완성적 공동체, 정의와 배려를 둘러싼 도덕(윤리)의 경계선 등으로 나뉘어 대립을 보여 왔다. 이 연구는 양자택일적 노선을 선택하기보다는 양자의 결합과 화해의 길을 모색하려고 한다. 양자의 대립지점에서 공존할 수 있는 제3의 대안을 찾고자 한다. 양자의 입장을 대체하는 방식이 아니라, 보완하는 공존의 방식을 통한 합의 도출을 통해 새로운 홀리스틱 윤리교육을 구성하려고 하는 것이다.
