Elder abuse encompasses a wide range of problems. Until now identifies five type of elder mistreatment: elder abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, emotional abuse, and financial exploitation. Even under the best circumstances, care giving is a physically and emotionally demanding task. When it becomes the primary responsibility of one family member, it can be overwhelming. The responsibilities impact family life, leisure time, work life, personal finances, and in some cases physical and mental health. Emotional burdens of care givers include grief, anger, anxiety, guilt, depression, embarrassment, and altered family dynamics. As the care recipient's condition declines and providing care becomes more involved, the situation tends to become increasingly tense for the care provider. Finally, There are suggestion Community Prevention Paradigm of Elder abuse through factors as individual level, family level and social level based on holistic education.

돌봄의 부정적 사건으로서 우리나라의 경우 노인 학대는 가족문화를 토대로 해석될 수밖에 없으며 가족과 밀착된 관계 속에서 역기능적 작용의 연속에서 분출된 결과로 볼 수 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 최근 65세 이상 노인인구가 크게 증가함에 따라 노인 학대와 관련한 사건도 증가하고 있지만 보다 심각한 문제는 홀리스틱 교육에 기초한 지역사회 노인학대 예방교육이 부재하다는 점이다. 2004년 1월 노인복지법 개정을 통하여 노인학대의 금지, 노인 학대 예방을 위한 긴급전화 설치, 노인보호전문기관의 설치, 노인 학대 신고 및 응급조치 등의 노인 학대 관련 조항을 신설하였다. 그러나 노인 학대 방지를 위한 법 조항이 신설된 것만으로는 노인인구의 증가와 함께 홀리스틱 교육 관점에서 볼 때, 돌봄 과정에서 나타날 수 있는 실질적인 노인학대 문제를 예방 또는 해결할 수 없다고 본다. 홀리스틱 교육은 인간에 대한 인간의 배려를 최우선으로 삼는 교육을 의미한다고 볼 때, 이러한 문제점을 개선하기 위한 대안으로 홀리스틱 교육에 기초한 지역사회 노인학대 예방교육의 필요성이 과거 어느 때보다도 절실한 실정이다. 따라서 본고에서는 돌봄 과정에서 나타날 수 있는 노인 학대에 관한 서로 다른 시각을 정리한 후, 지금까지 연구되어 온 노인학대에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 활용하여 홀리스틱 교육 차원에서 지역사회 노인 학대 예방교육모형을 모색해 보았다.
