This study investigated the concept of null curriculum which schools do not teach and examined theoretical discussions and curricula implications for taboo topics. In order to do that, I discussed the definition of taboo and the taboo topics. The holistic null curriculum as taboo topics are classified such reasons as political, religious, sexual and social ones. I noted that conceptions of curriculum play the dominant role in how null curriculum is defined, and pointed out that a given null curriculum can be identified only in relation to what is valued as educationally significant. Although the notion of null curriculum cannot be defined in precise terms, I concluded that it has worthwhile application in certain practical areas of curriculum development in order to develop students’ integrative, reflective, critical and creative thinking abilities based on holistic curriculum orientations.

이 논문은 학교교육과정에서 핵심적인 문제인 가치 있는 내용 선정이 주로 주지주의적인 관점에서 관습적으로 이루어져 왔다는 점에 착안하여 배제된 교육과정인 영 교육과정(null curriculum)을 논의하였다. 영 교육과정은 스탠퍼드 대학교의 명예교수인 Eisner가 만든 용어로 학교교육과정에서 일종의 그림자 영역으로 다루어지지 않은 교육과정을 말한다. 그리고 영 교육과정 중에서 비실용적이며 이론과 상식에 위배되기 때문에 금기(taboo)시 된 주제의 개념을 논의하였다. 금기적 주제는 학교 문화의 보수성이 주된 이유라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 이와 관련하여 주로 미국의 학교교육과정에서 문학작품이 어떤 이유로 배제되고 검열을 당했는지를 논의하였다. 주요 이유로는 정치적 이유, 종교적 이유, 성적 이유, 사회적 이유로 나누어 논의하였다. 결론적으로 홀리스틱 교육과정과 관련하여 금기적 주제로서의 영 교육과정은 오히려 학생들의 통합적·반성적·비판적·창의적 사고의 발달에 핵심적이라는 점이다.
