The history of police science is quite short, and the terminology ‘police science’ also. Thus it is necessary to establish a solid identity of police science. In this dissertation will be discussed about the identity of police science and the growing interchanging possibilities with other sciences. The definition of police and police science in established studies has been surveyed, the definition of police nowadays is progressing formal and in substance covering the police concept. Police science is not only expanding its concept in police system, but also in the related public security. On the other hand, to establish police science in the academic world, it is necessary to differentiate its research subject from the other studies and its specific point of view, existing of practical aims, hiring more police science associated academic degree holders for a solid academic environment, and to continue active academic research activities. As police science is a study composed of various studies adaptation, the importance and necessity of its interchanging and combining study exchange is essential. To support this, a police science database for the academic researchers has been suggested, and in this process should be urged academic society or publication activities could through the specialization and cooperation operations between police science and other various sciences accelerated.

경찰학의 역사가 비교적 일천하고, 경찰학이라는 용어가 단독으로 사용된 지도 그리 오래된 일이 아니어서 경찰학의 정체성이 더욱 확고하게 확립되어야 한다. 이 논문에서는 경찰학의 정체성에 대해 논의해보고, 경찰학의 정체성 확립을 전제로 타학문과의 발전적인 교류 방안에 대해 탐색하고자 하였다. 현재 경찰의 개념이 형식적 의미의 경찰과 실질적 의미의 경찰 개념을 포괄하는 추세로 나아가고 있고, 경찰학 역시 경찰이라고 하는 기관뿐만 아니라 그와 관련을 맺고 있는 치안환경을 연구대상으로 하는 학문으로 개념을 확장하고 있다. 한편, 경찰학이 학계에서 정체성을 확립하기 위해서는 연구대상이 다른 학문과 구별될 것, 다른 학문과 구별되는 관점의 특수성이 존재할 것, 그리고 경찰학만의 실천적 목적이 존재할 것, 경찰관련 학과의 교수진에 경찰학 관련 전공자를 충원하여 내실을 기할 것, 학계에서의 활발한 연구노력이 지속될 것 등을 제시하였다. 그러나 경찰학은 다학문의 기초적 토대의 응용으로 형성된 응용학문인 만큼 학문의 정체성 확립을 위해서는 여러 학문과의 유기적이고 통합적인 연구 교류가 필요하다. 이를 위해 경찰학 관련 연구들이 각 학문분야에서 이루어지고 있다는 것을 관련 연구자들에게 상기시켜줄 수 있는 수단으로 경찰학 데이터베이스를 구축할 것을 제안하고, 이를 통해 학회나 학회지 저술활동을 통해 경찰학 및 여러 연계 학문 연구자들과의 분업ㆍ협업적인 연구활동이 활발하게 이루어져 경찰학의 토대를 다져야 할 것이다.
