This paper summarizes the recent trends of South Korean Policing Studies. It discusses the perspectives of 3 Journals of South Korean Policing Studies and foreign Policing Journals. South Korean Researchers on Policing have dealt with the subjects on transforming from exclusively nationalized police structures to local ones, independence of police powers of investigating crimes from prosecutors, protecting the basic rights of assembly and demonstration, police corruptions, introducing the small police stations systems into which 3~4 patrol boxes was integrated, police recruiting system, police union and welfare. It summarizes the characteristics of Korean Policing Studies as follows: first, it supports the policy of police authority; secondly, it traces the demand of civil society organizations; thirdly, it lacks the interdisciplinary cooperation studies; fourthly, it accepts the perspectives and interests of the graduates from Korean National Police University(KNPU); fifthly, it avoids the topic which the police authority or the graduates from of KNPU taboos, for example, the issues of the establishment of independent police ombudsman or civil police oversight systems, the permission of police union, the abolition of the present over-privileged type of KNPU, and so on. Lastly, there are so many studies on practical policing but so little ones on Korean Policing Theory, Korean Policing History, Korean Police Cultures, Comparative Policing, and so on.

이 논문은 우리나라 경찰학의 최근 동향을 이슈별로 정리하였다. 우리나라에서 출간되고 있는 대표적인 경찰학 관련 저널 3종과 외국 저널들을 바탕으로 인상비평 방법론에 의거하여 작성하였다. 우리나라 경찰학의 연구 주제는 크게 보아 자치경찰, 수사권, 집회시위, 경찰부패, 지역경찰제, 경찰임용방식, 경찰노조와 경찰복지 등의 7개로 분류한 다음, 해당 주제별로 연구경향을 요약하였다. 각 주제가 연구되는 관점과 경향성은 연구자의 존재 구속성이나 경찰학과 출신, 시대적 변화 및 정책 변화에 따라 민감하게 반응하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 한편 우리나라 경찰학의 특성은 첫째 정부입장에 따른 연구, 둘째 시민사회의 수요에 부응하는 연구, 셋째 협동연구 부재, 넷째 경찰조직이나 경찰대학 출신의 요구에 따른 연구, 다섯째 경찰조직이나 경찰대학 출신이 터부시하는 분야의 연구 기피 현상 등으로 정리해볼 수 있었다. 우리나라 경찰학에서 현장경찰업무론은 연구 성과가 풍부한 반면, 한국경찰이론, 한국경찰역사, 한국경찰문화, 한국경찰법, 비교경찰론 등에서는 크게 부족하며 순수 경찰학 접근도 드물다. 예컨대 미시적이거나 거시적인 경찰역사, 경찰문화, 경찰이론 등을 구축해보려는 시도나 노력은 찾아보기 힘들다.
