This study aims to empirically examine the actual state of the current curriculums among the newly established police science related departments at universities in Korea, while taking into account the academic identity of police science. For this study, twenty seven departments out of total fifty three police science-related departments were selected considering the region, department organization and data availability. The curriculums of the selected departments were comparatively analyzed according to the number of major courses, areas of subject, department organization, the year of department establishment, and the relative importance of the subjects which are focusing on police entrance examination. It is expected that the findings of this study can be a guide for the prospective universities with the intent to establish new police science-related departments. They may develop an improved curriculum based upon this study. In addition, while universities play the normative role of scholastic pursuit, they should also consider the functional role as cultivators of professional human resources. Therefore, the curriculum need to be improved in order to make students competent, who can handle modern technology and current social issues efficiently. In other words, it is necessary to make an effort to reinforce the connection between the curriculums and the fields in order to cultivate competent human resources required by the society. In conclusion, there should be an agreement on the standard of academic system and identity of police science related departments. Then, various kinds of efforts should be made in order to improve the current curriculums of police science

이 연구는 경찰학 관련학과가 신설된 4년제 국내 대학의 교과과정을 고찰하고 실증적 분석을 통하여 경찰학의 학문적 정체성을 고려한 현행 교과과정 편성의 실태에 대하여 연구하고자 하였다. 이 연구는 전국적으로 분포되어 있는 53개의 4년제 경찰학 관련학과 중 지역, 학과 편제, 자료수집의 용이성을 고려하여 총 27개의 학과를 대상으로 각 학과의 교과과정을 전공과목의 선택 수에 따라 영역, 학과의 편제, 학과의 개설연도, 경찰수험과목의 선택 비중에 따라 비교 분석하였다. 이러한 연구 결과는 경찰학 관련학과를 신설하려는 대학에서 교과과정을 구성하거나 기존의 교과과정을 개선하는데 하나의 지침이 될 것으로 기대된다. 또한 대학은 학문탐구라는 규범적 역할을 하지만, 전문인력 양성이라는 기능적 역할도 중요시되어야 한다. 따라서 교과과정은 시대와 기술의 변화를 반영하여 사회가 요구하는 인력을 개발할 수 있도록 개선되어야 할 것이다. 즉 사회가 요구하는 유능한 인재를 양성하기 위하여 교육과정과 현장과의 연관성을 강화시키는 노력이 필요하다. 그리고 경찰학 관련학과의 교과과정을 발전시키기 위해서는 경찰학의 학문적 체계와 정체성을 확립하는 것이 무엇보다도 선행되어야 할 것이고, 이에 따르는 체계적 교과과정의 기준을 제시하는 다각적인 노력을 해야 할 것이다.
