The traffic safety sign is the Public Design which is one of the most important part as a social communication method. On the other hand, the expression of a person in the traffic safety sign in Korea was mixed with many other countries' sign standards- Europe, The US and Japan etc. when it was developed at the first time in Korea, so it is that some of the expressions of a person are vague they are international standards(ISO 7001) or not. This paper analyses the expressin of a person based on regulations of Korean laws and presents the solution of expression method by the comparative study of overseas traffic safety signs and public notice signs in international standards. In conclusion, this paper proposes the guideline for the desirable expression method of a person in the traffic safety signs as a public design, and may help lay the groundwork for reinforcement of the public design and raise the nationalistic pride in Korea.

교통안전표지판은 도로안전시설 중 없어서는 안 될 중요한 부분으로 사회적인 커뮤니케이션으로서의 ‘공공디자인’ 이다. 우리나라의 교통안전표지는 기준설정당시 국제연합, 일본 등의 기준을 혼합 적용한 체계로 이루어져 일부 기준들은 과학적 근거가 모호한 점이 있다. 이것은 교통안전표지의 인물표현에도 그 양상이 나타나 실사의 실루엣인지 국제표준(ISO 7001) 인지 그 기준이 모호하다. 연구방법으로 우리나라의 현재 법령에서 정하고 있는 규정을 기준으로 인물표현을 분석하고 외국 교통안전표지 사례와 국제기준의 공공안내표지와의 비교를 통해 표현방법을 분석 하였다. 이러한 분석의 결과를 토대로 교통안전표지의 인물표현에 있어 가이드라인설정과 구체적 표현방법을 제안하여 ‘공공디자인’으로서의 기준을 마련하고 도로안전시설로서의 기능적 측면의 향상은 물론 사회적인 커뮤니케이션으로서의 토대를 마련한다.
