In this paper I have reflected the history of Kerean Christian Education not in the narrow perspective of education as an institutional history but in the broad perspective of education as a cultural history, not a discriptive history on the past but the history as the story of anticipation of the future from the time of opening its doors to foreign countries to the end of Imperial Japan’s colonial governance. The history of christian education in Korea is very unique because the special purpose for the saving of the nation has dissolved the general purpose of the developing workers for the kingdom of heaven and the building of the kingdom of God in this world in the varieties of curriculum and contents, forms and methods of christian education. I have investigated this characteristic in Underwood of his missionary activities with maximizing the patriotic motivation of korean scholars in high society, in Lee Sang Jae of his christian cultural movement accompanied by patriotism and saving the country, in the event of 105 man, the 3.1 independence movement, the movement for the promoting of products, and the deny exercising shrine worship, etc., and in the christian cultural movements by women. I saw history as above and asked the meaning of history of korean christian education: How can we invoke the past to present and ask its meaning toward the future? And I emphasize that the gospel should be imprinted in the heart of individual in the present context and expressed in unique and concrete life.

이 논문에서 필자는 개화기에서 일제말까지 한국의 기독교교육을 제도사적인 좁은 관점이 아니라 문화사적인 넓은 관점으로, 과거의 역사서술이 아니라 미래를 선취하는 역사이야기로 고찰하였다. 한국 기독교교육의 역사는 ‘구국’이라는 특수한 목적이 하나님나라의 건설과 천국일꾼의 양성이라는 보편적 목적을 기독교교육의 과정과 내용 그리고 형태와 방법에서 성인교육에 이르기까지 다양하게 녹여낸 역사로 확인된다. 이를 언더우드의 구국의 동기를 최대화한 선교문화활동에서, 이상재의 애국과 구국을 지향하는 기독교적 교육문화운동에서, 그리고 105인 사건, 3ㆍ1독립운동, 물산장려운동, 신사참배거부, 등에서, 그리고 여성에 의한 기독교적 교육문화운동에서 살펴보았다. 이상과 같은 내용을 전개하면서 저자는 한국의 기독교교육의 과거를 현재로 불러내어 미래를 향하여 그 의미를 물었다. 그리고 복음이 현재화의 얼개 속에서 개개인의 가슴에 각인되고 고유하고 구체적인 삶으로 표현되어가야 함을 강조하였다.
