The purpose of this study is reflecting on unification education historical perspective. For this purpose, we define concept of unification education. According to such definition we try to figure out which subject is appropriate to teach and how to teach. There are still controversies between two subjects, ethics education and social studies. If we define unification as empowering students to criticize communism and its strategies, subject must be ethics education because social studies only concern about social phenomena rather than focusing on moral or ethical problem. Another issue is if moral education subject should be independent one or not. It is relate to particularism and universalism because unification is particular reality in Korea. Universalist insist it cannot be independent subject because there are no nation in the world. We would like to apply recent trends of curriculum change. Post-modernism is one of the trend, so moral education including unification education could be independent subject. We also try to figure out critics of unification in historical viewpoint. Lack of professional knowledge will be first reason of critic, but it comes from social and political environments. We also looked for future of unification education.

본고는 지금까지의 통일 교육을 역사적으로 성찰해 보고자하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해서 통일 교육이란 무엇인가에 대한 개념을 정의해보고 그러한 정의 하에서 어떤 과목에서 어떤 형태로 가르쳐져야하는가를 살펴보려하였다. 도덕․윤리과에서 가르쳐 져야하는가 사회과에서 가르쳐져야하는가는 정의여하에 따라 달라진다. 통일 교육이 윤리 철학적 측면에서 다루어져야하는 이유는 그러한 공산주의철학이나 윤리관에 대한 정확한 인식 없이는 통일 정책이나 방안도 제대로 이해할 수 없기 때문이다. 따라서 통일 교육은 사회현상을 다루는 사회과 보다는 윤리나 가치를 다루는 도덕․윤리과 교육에서 다루어져야한다. 통일교육이 도덕윤리과로 다루어질 때 독립교과로 다루어져야 하는가 그렇지 않은가의 논의는 보편성과 특수성에 대한 논의로서 교육과정 철학과 관련된 문제이다. 이를 위해서 최근의 세계적 교육과정 개정 철학의 추이를 기준으로 삼았다. 그런 경향을 감안할 때 분단의 특수성과 상황의 중요성을 감안해보면 우리로서는 독립교과로 다루어져야 옳다. 통일교육의 반성을 위해서는 쉐플러의 기준에 따랐는데 방법 면에서 접근 면에서 전문성 면에서 많은 취약점을 가지고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 방향에 대해서는 윤리학 중심이라는 새로운 교육과정의 기본 정신을 따라야 한다고 보았다.
